Has anybody cut them out and replaced with a straight pipe?

About how much louder would it sound?

I have not messed with the pre-cats. I thought about it.....

I put on high flow cat in the mean time which is really a straight pipe with a mesh in side. I have flowmaster 50 series.

My Q has a nice healthy rumble very aggressive when horsing hard but a nice pur when crusing. I find my self admiring the sound all the time. You might notice alittle change in gas mileage. I would like to know if anyone has straight piped the pre-cats...

Whats a "Pre-Cat"? Mine is a 94 Q, and I have, Exhaust Manifold, Straight Pipe to the Cat, then a Pre-Muffler, and then a Rear Main Muffler.

I had both the straight pipes that are in front of the Cats, (rust holes) replaced yesterday, and was wondering about the Pre-Mufflers....after the Cats...

Hes not talking about cats, he talking about the pre mufflers...

Meaux, search for posts by heavy duty, he cut his premuffs out and said it really didnt add much noise, but made it a little rumblier.

The premufflers are already straight thru design, the rear muffler creates most of back pressure............that's where one would start to gain the 5HP.

i cut mine out..sound change is minimal..but for some reason the car seems to run quicker...less hesitation off the line? seems lighter on the gas too...only sound changes when at high rpm..but nothing too crazy...

The "pre mufflers" are resonators, to reduce noise. Not much of a performance hit or gain. The "H" pipe basically reduces back pressure a bit, by inducing scavenging. Changing to an "X" pipe would change the sound, possibly reduce the back pressure and reduce low-end torque a bit, but increase a little high-end power. Might even increase rumble a bit.
