Precat failure for sure. Nissan owes you an engine. Get in touch with a dealer.

Put a cat-less header on the next engine to avoid this happening again.

I call bull****. It's a known issue. Pitch a fit and/or go higher up (i.e. Nissan North America) if you have to. Precat failure is a failure in design of the vehicle, thereby making it Nissan's fault.

Its a known issue that Nissan Did not cover for 02-03s one of the reasons why im not buying another Nissan Ever (except maybe a Z car, Infinity doesn't count) Hence my recent Purchase of a GTI. Nissan didnt cover 02-03 on the precat and butterfly recalls. Luckily i had installed an aftermarket header and locktited my butterfly screws myself before this could happen to me.

Interesting. 86k is completely out of warranty too, but when did this start happening?

I'm thinking that there might be a loophole by the 8y/80k emissions equipment warranty if you can show that the damage was incurred prior to that, though I'm not sure how.

I'd still contact NNA. http://www.nissanusa.com/apps/contactus

Probably try Consumer Affairs first.

I double checked the recall and it doesn't apply to your car, as the dealer stated, so I'm not sure any of this will work. It seems idiotic to me, because it's the same design flaw as the vehicles they DO cover.

You may only succeed in raising Hell, but IMO every single 02-06 Spec owner ought to be allowed to beat the engineers who designed the shoddy precat and decided to use the exhaust valves as an EGR over the head with their exhaust mani's.
