You might have a bad O-ring, The metal piping that connects to the hydraulic fan pump has o-rings as seals. You might want to check these o-rings and replace with new ones.

Double E, the M45 is one member of the club of peculiar cars that have a hydraulic fan. It does not have a fan clutch nor an electric fan. When you take the plastic cover off your engine you will see that there are two P/S fluid canisters. One is for the P/S, the other is for the hydraulic fan. As MIG_45 stated this is a dual function Water Pump and Hydraulic fluid pump that drives the engine fan.

I had a leak coming out of hose connection and repaired it with an O-ring. After this the system began to leak a lot. I now think its leaking from the pump itself.
To replace it all parts stores want to charge a ridiculous amount for shipping to PR where I live. It adds up to over $300 when the part is about $140.

I'm planing on taking it apart and see if it can be repaired. (The Service manual says not to open it, anyone knows why?)

Now other option I have considered is to change the pump for a normal water pump (which I see replacements in the internet for $30) an add an electric motor fan eliminating the hydraulic system. I have a used fan from a Crown Vic (pull), and could install a smaller second one in front of the radiator (push) just in case.

Does any one know if the pump replacement could work in terms of pulley alignment? has any one tried this before?

I'll share my similar experience- for what it's worth-

I had pulled the fan/rad off to change an idler pulley. After reinstalling, had a leak from the fan pump. Got some replacement O-rings, no luck. As you described, it seemed to be coming from behind the pump.
So, I resigned myself to feeding the leak until I could get around to replacing the whole pump (which was around $300, as I recall.)

And then..it stopped leaking.

The only thing I could figure is that I had changed fluids while feeding the leak. I had been using a generic PS fluid, but switched to transmission fluid (also generic) when I ran out of PS fluid. Maybe that was it, I don't know. It's been 2 years with no leaks now.

Good luck to you.
