I need help, I have a 90 sx with pwr windows, my problem is the drivers side window will not roll up or down. What I want to know is their a way to determine if there is a problem with the motor or if it's an electrical problem. I bought the car recently from this guy, but he wasn't sure what happend to the window... any help would be gratefule... maybe I should mention that the window can be pulled up or pushed down, so maybe it is the motor...

Thanks, Jay

First, start by removing the door panel. Be sure to hook the window switch back up so you can try to roll the window up or down. Once off, you can investigate. Check to see if the window is off the track (which could be why you can push it up/down). If it isnt, try pushing the switch and tapping on the motor lightly with a hammer, and see if anything happens. Its a start.

Use a voltometer to check for power at the switch and at the motor. If your getting power to both of those you are bound to need a new motor

remove the door panel and if you can get access to the window motor, tap it lightly with a screwdriver handle while running the switch up and down. If you get the window to work, then it's the motor. If not then you have a short somewhere in the wiring.

on other cars i've owned with the same problem, i 'rebuilt' the switches. if you're absolutely sure that its not the window track, motor, or short, try taking apart the pw switch. most of the time you would be able to take it apart without destroying it (never did this in a 240 but in many other cars). check the metal contacts under the switches. most likely you will find that some of the contact points will be black from years and years of contact (up, down, up, down over and over). these black spots are where sparks came from and also prevent the motor from getting any current. clean those contact points up. you might have to sand down some of the black spots with some really fine sand paper or steel wool. once they are clean and free of dirt, go ahead and apply some dielectric grease on the contact points (same stuff that comes with spark plug wires). put the switch together, put your door together and see if it works. its better than trying to find a switch in the junk yard. even better if you have a spare you can practice on first.
