I have 1998 240sx se and the power steering pump doesnt seem to be working. The pump doesnt make any whining noise like a bad pump would but for some reason the steering wheel is very stiff. Any suggestions would be helpful.

fluid level ok? belt on? start there if thats ok you either have a bad rack or bad valveing in the pump.

a bad rack meaning the belt wouldnt be tight enough on it, the belt fluid are okay. if the valve in the pump is bad do i have to replace it or can it be fixed

no bad rack ment bad power steering rack( the unit that turns the tires). The pump can be rebuilt but it might be difficult to find a rebuilder it is not common practice anymore. people usually just replace it instead of rebuild it any more. same holds true for the rack. rebuilding components is becoming a thing of the past due to higher labor rates.
