So I've got a weird problem with my uncle's Xterra. Its a 2000, VG33E. Well, his power steering pump went bad so I replaced that, and then found out that the high pressure hose was leaking, so I replaced that whole hose assembly as well. after bleeding it twice and filling it with fluid, it seemed good. He came back the next day saying it was whining, and it was whining ALOT. So I looked at it, turns out he left the power steering cap off. So I bled it again, added the correct amount of fluid, and it was good. As I was driving to his house to drop it off, seemed ok, and then bam out of no where it started whining again. Fluid level was okay, and no leaks.

I'm stumped, any ideas?

Many pumps if ever run low will whine from then on, fords are notorious for that. Once run low it does some damage and the whine stays. Not sure if anything but a new one will repair it. You may try PS additive to combat whine and see if it can help. Hope this helps, you may want to google PS whine and see if you can find any other ideas.

My ex boss got me sold on this stuff. Its the lucas power steering additive. Its n a little white bottle and is around the 10 dollar area. You probably wont even use the whole bottle maybe 30% of it if that.

I bought the biggest bottle for home which is a good thing since I bought a gm with a leaky gear box. It sealed it up and got rid of the pump noise.

I would give it a shot before replacing a pump any time now.

Had a caravan come into the shop. Lost its cap and fluid and pump howed. Added p/s fluid bleed it out and added this stuff. The lady was amazed. Her van had never been so quiet.

Ill check out the Lucas additive, thanks! I'm having a hard time blaming the pump since its a brand new pump from the dealer.
