I posted this in the general forum But i would probbaly get better response here. I think my power steering is going out It is hard to turn the wheel at low speed and stop. could this be from greese monkey flushing the system with reg power steering fluid ( i had them change it back I probably drove with it in there for about 30 miles) It seems like the pump isnt getting power or somehting ill be driving and Ill come to a stop and be able to turn it a little bit then its gets hard and starts to kinda moan. I have a appointment on thurs I hope its nothing big you guys got any ideas?

Any chance of air in the system? There is a solenoid on the P/S rack for a reduction of assist as speed increases. This can be checked by a voltage check at the diagnostic connector. I have found 2 Q's with failed P/S controllers this way. The manual details the procedure.

Just replaced the drive shaft on my power steering pump. (92 Q45). The bearing was shot - probably caused by too much tension on the belt. You will find two bolts if you look through the holes on the pulley and two more on the right of the housing that attach it to the block. Just four bolts and disconnect the hose.I was quoted $697 Canadian for the pump and they told me that I had to buy a pump, as they did not sell the parts. I convinced the parts guy to check again and he found the drive shaft for the pump for $70 Can. Check out http://www.car-parts.com and get a used pump, supposedly they are quite durable from what I have read on other postings.Good luck.

Follow the directions [section ST = 43 pages] in your shop manual to determine if the power steering ecu, controller, and solenoid are operating correctly. 95% of the time one of these is the culprit. The system uses signals from speed sensor, stop lamp switch, neutral and parking brake switches to determine amount of boost.

I would think the dealer would do that but I am pretty sure they did it all half assed. What would I have to ask to have someone check these for me since I do not have the service manual(someone took it) could I take it to a nissan dealer?

Another question would a bad bearing make the wheel wobble or does that sound more like a tie rod (the dealer told me my left front bearing was bad thats why the wheel wobbled)

The tie rod will partially determine where the plane of the wheel is; the bearing will determine how tightly the wheel stays in that plane. The bearing is a suspect for a wobbly wheel, especially if the wobble is regular with respect to wheel rotation, but worn bushings in the axle housing could cause it too. Can you jack up the corner, pull the wheel off, and turn the hub by hand? A grinding, rough feel would confirm a bad bearing, I think.

You will need a manual to check the P/S operation, any higher level tech can check the voltage at the diagnostic connector.

Denver How did you fix this?I know I'm really stretching your memory...

But I have the same symptoms.

For anyone else interested in helping... Speedo is fine but voltage is above 5v all the time when testing the speed sensor. I Didn't write down the test results but can redo and post, they all seem screwey against the book values. Solenoid is definitely fine.Parking brake test is way off (!?)

Hate to throw parts at it...

More concise results in a bit.
