The speed sensor and control units are rare to fail. Most common issues for hard steering is the gauge cluster. Here is a good read to diagnose the PS system

My control unit kept overheating. Replaced and no problem for three years...

Thank you. Is that located under floorboard passenger side? How did you know it was overheating?

The shop did it. Not sure of location. I know the ECU is under floorboard. Find one on eBay, match pic with what's with ECU.

The shop opened it up and saw burn marks.

A good thing to have is a shop manual.

I pulled out my repair records and found the work on the power steering. The shop opened it up and found "circuit board dry jointed badly". Repaired board but "90% improvement but untouchably hot".

Replaced steering control ECM with used unit. Works since Sept 3, 2019. Part was $49

Unit is under floorboard on passenger side on N/A cars.

Thanks for that information. Replacing the PS control module was next on my list to try solving problem.
