I have been considering ditching the power steering. one of my hoses leaks, and instead of replacing it. I was wondering if anyone has gone to manual steering, how it feels, and how you did it?

I think Night said he ditched it on his car?

HEY CAM DID YOU JUST PLUG THE RACK OR RECIRCULATE THE FLUID BY ATTACHING A HOSE BETWEEN THE FITTINGS?

OK YOU PLUGGED IT THEN. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF YOU PLUGGED THE LINES OR CONNECTED THE TWO HOLES ON THE RACK TO CIRCULTATING THE STEERING FLUID, LOWERING THE RESISTANCE AND RAISING THE PRESSURE SO IT TURNS EASIER WITH LESS RACK DAMAGE.

i believe we would be better off circulating the lines that connects to the pump.

i'm disconnecting my PS soon, when i don't feel too lazy.

WHEN I GET THE AUTO transmission I'M GOING TO DISCONNECT THE PS, THIS IS TO GAIN SOME OF THE LOST POWER AND THE FACT THAT I WILL HAVE BOTH HANDS FOR STEERING AVAILABLE ALL THE TIME.

but how would you get the air out of your lines if you connect up a new line?

YOU WONT NEED TO BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO POWERSTEERING, IF YOU MUST HAVE IT IN STALL A T CONNECTION WITH A BLEEDER VALVE OR A CHECK VALVE.

Fellas, the stock PS pumps already have a built-in bypass valve to regulate pressure. This is why people can just plug the back part of their HICAS PS pumps without blowing a seal.

To be on the safe, safe side, you could just remove the valve so that the pump is constantly on full bypass.

use the stock rb PS pump and take the fins out of the rear portion and plug up that hole. Get rid of the skyline steering rack with lines and crap. Put the 240sx steering rack in and hook the main line to the front portion of the pump and VOILA power steering. Add Power steering fluid in the reservoir and start engine. There will be MAJOR foaming at the reservoir for a few minutes of running. Then the foaming will stop as all the air comes out and fill with PS fluid until the level is appropriate and all foaming stops.

I dont think i can live without PS. Without PS its really hard to do turns when you are going slow...when your going fast its not so bad. But for drifting ur gunna need PS.

your fluid will just "circulate" as the pinion move side to side; you don't need to bleed any air. make sure you have plenty of fluid enclosed to avoid drying out seals. some car are oem manual steering equiped and it's similar that way.

Actually, once you get above around 5-6k the pump pours out of the pulley shaft if the Hicas is plugged. You need to "castrate" the pump by pulling out the fins like FF said) if you plug off the back of the pump.

You would also be leaving dead weight on the motor for no reason if it was left in there.

First I've heard of the pump leaking. rbsileighty, did you remove the spring and valve before plugging the HICAS when that pump leaked?

But yeah, remove the pump if you're not using it. Oh wait... I just realized you were talking about recirculating the rack, not the pump. Sorry for the confusion!

Has anyone had any long term problems with just plugging off the steering rack to eliminate power steering? I am about to do this and just wanna be sure. Thanks.

I would recirculate the rack..... plugging the rack will create alot of pressure. at least hook up the resevoir on the drain side and plug the pressure to get some flow instead of building pressure.

If this helps anyone reading this. I kept the powersteering (got a new line at the junkyard for $15). A buddy of mine bought a new one at Autozone (they had it in stock!!) for around $50.

Good thread. I would like to add that my HICAS PS pump is still not leaking (fingers crossed). I removed the valve body from the rear pump section but did not remove the vanes. Hopefully this will continue to work.

What about looping the hose on the steering rack and throwing a check valve in the middle to bleed off exccese pressure?
