Ive been having this issue with my 94 Q for about a month now. I dont think its the fluid because I check that regularly. Its getting more and more annoying especially when it decudes to stop working right before I paralell park my car. Try parralell parking a 4 thousand lb car with 2 surgically repaired shoulders and no powersteering lol. SUCKS. Plus sometimes when Im on the highway the power steering kicks back in while im going around a bend go 80mph+ which causes it to jerk badly into another lane. Any help with this issue would be appreciated. Thanks in advance because you all have been a great help since I got my Q in 06'.

my 94 Q45 has also been doing the same thing for ever. I'm not an expert but reading the forum for so long my suggestion would be:

1. speed sensor in the p/s pump2. p/s pump is going out

good luck

Check out ST-33 of the manual. It may be malfunctioning to fail-safe mode which puts it in high speed assist. Mine needs some muscle when that kicks in at low speeds.

I have flushed the PS with 2 quarts of PS fluid, and a couple of us have now added an ounce or two of Sea Foam Trans Tune(also for PS) to help remove any varnish. It's better but not yet normal.

How will Sea Foam remove varnish it does not contain the correct solvents?

Now BG Quick Clean for transmissions or engines does!

Based on volume of fluids about 2 ounces of either in PS and a 15 minute hot up before draining and flushing should remove some varnish.

Always take a few days to experiment chemically with various solvents and detergents on junk yard parts to understand what the requirements for success are

I have a 97 Q45 and have been fighting a power steering problem for about 9 months. This started with the fluid foaming up and foaming out of the resouver. The steering got very stiff. Through extensive troubleshooting I found a filter in resouver that filtered the return oil before it would supply the pump. I tried first to clean this filter. After that did not work I ordered a new resouver. After I installed that and bleed the air out the power steering is like new.

Legal proof that you or previous owner didn't replace the PS fluid every 30k a recommended. The interior of hoses fail from acidic PS fluid and flake off filling filter.

Unfortunately [or otherwise] the 90-96 don't have filters.

The previous owner of my car complained about the same problem and the service records indicate the dealer replaced the speed sensor to rectfiy the intermittent loss of p/s, but obviously that wasn't the solution.

I ended up replacing the instrument cluster and it never happened again, but my car is an Active model and the cluster is different than the standard Q45.
