I have the power steering pump and all the lines, but there is no fluid in the pump b/c i dont like p/s, i want to take the pump out and shorten the belt but i have one quick question. Ive heard rumors that if i take out the pump my steering rack will eventually freeze up, and slowly by slowly it will get harder to turn. Is this true? If so what can i do to get rid of the pump and still have my steering?

Take off your pressure lines and sell them to me

I actually wondered the same, I see there's the belt there so I was just going to fix it. The pump itself is over $400 from Auto Zone so that was out of the question.

But if you decide you want to take it off, let me know. I'll buy all the hoses from you.

Just loop the two lines that come out of your rack so dirt wont get in there and you should be set. Turn the wheel so some fluid will come out of the rack before you loop them or it might blow the hose off. Leaving some fluid and protecting the insides so nothing gritty enters should protect it from the eliments and save your rack. I have a spare ps pump if somone needs it

You have the spare hoses by chance? One of mine is punctured and I want to replace them all at once. If you have any, let me know by PM or email me at [email protected]

the rack does need lubrication , so leave fluid in it but I would think it would be fine...

am wondering that too, what size belt would go for just the water pump & crankshaft pulley?.

(and that wouldn't sort of overspin the waterpump?, or i take it the waterpump can handle it.(i mean cause shorter belt = more spinnin?))

the length of the belt has nothing to do with faster or slower turning. The speed is based on the ratio of the driving pulley to the accessory pulley.

That seems to be the concensus. Just cap/loop/whatever the lines, leave fluid in the rack, and get a new belt. I haven't had any experience w/ draining or capping the lines, but i will soon. I'm planning to either get rid of my p/s and do the same capping and such, OR drain all the fluid and refill it all. And by soon I mean, when I get a job. ...

loop the rack hoses together so that the fluid can be retained...in order to get the belt lenth cut the belt wrap it around all the pulleys you are using then cut out the excess so that the ends meet as tight as you can pull it ,then measure the overall lenth of this .That will get you in the neighborhood .Most belts are incremented in 1/4 to 1/2 inch .There is no shop I know that "make" belts.

Ive also heard of string being used to measure, though string may sink deeper into the V of the pully, and read slightly smaller then you would need.
