So I just got this 01 QX4. My first car, and I now have power steering problems

SO Ive got a used power steering rack and pump coming to me, should be here in a few days, and like I said, this is my first car, so Ive never done anything like this. Ive climbed under my car a while ago, just to see what I was getting into, and the rack itself didnt seem hard.

2 tie rods, 2 big *** bolts bolting it down, and some fluid lines.....

The pump, I couldnt even freakin see

I just need some advice, some info, from anyone with experience with this swap or any advice at all. Special tools etc.

Im gonna take some pictures in the morning if it stops snowing of underneath and ontop and such, so I can maybe get some extra help.

Ive also got a service manual, but cant find the removal/install of either part, just the rebuild guides for them. Not how to actually take them in and out of the car.

Any help is appreciated guys,

THanks alot

This is the correct Forum for you post. Infiniti General nor any other Forum is not appropriate for a duplicate post as it degrades subsequent searches by members.

Good luck with a used rack!

The FSM is written for votech educated [2 year autotechnology course] graduates or years of on the job training preceeded by apprenticeship.

Someone with all tools and test equipment and practical experience in how to use them.........................hard to teach over internet.

Well are there special tools required for the job I am doing, or will simple hand tools do the job here.......

I personally cant even find the removal/install of either part in the service manual, only the rebuild portions of them....

I replaced my p/s pump on my 02 with the vq35. pretty easy to swap out. remove battery, remove banjo nut where hose connects with 24mm (i think) socket, take out 2 bolts(1 is through pulley hole) remove from top. replace oring on hose end after new one is in jack front tires off the ground and turn wheels while adding oil

So thats all that to it, I can see the one big banjo connection, but it looked like there may be more hose connections (may be wrong) and 2 bolts holding it to the block? Do you have to completely take off the p/s pulley to get to that bolt?

Any info on removing the p/s rack

Don't know about QX4 truck, but RWD sedan's pretty straight forward.

If you don't have a lift, you must be young, strong and if not stupid, at least hard headed.

If the FSM is not abundantly obvious to you, you should engage a front end specialist. Might go to http://www.tirerack.com and view the installers in your area. A perusing of the reviews and a visit to the top three should help you decide on one.

You will need an alignment!

are you a talented mechanic? If not good luck. I also second, if this is not a rebuilt rack your going to have to repeat this exercise again.

Remember also you need to do an alignment after you finish it. My advise, if your a novice and not usually a good mechanical type your overmatched.

Ive never done anything as a swap like this, but Ive done a few motor swaps and wheel bearings. But I dont really get the uninstall/install of these itesma s I cant find them in the FSM. Id love to know how the rack comes out, the pump looks easy enough.

beside the banjo there is a smaller 10mm bolt then both hoses come off together. 2nd bolt you have to turn pulley until it lines up and insert socket through pulley onto bolt. pulley stays on. new pump comes with pulley

Ok so the pump doesnt sound toooooooooo.... hard for working in the freezing cold, but hope I can find all the bolts that attach it to the block.

For the steering rack, am i just breaking free the tie rods, the 2 big strap bolts, somehow disconnect from the steering columb (no idea how to do this) and the few hardlines that go to it, and it just slides out the side of the frame ?

I'll try and get pics today, cause **** I dont know what im talking about
