Does anybody have a "how-to" on power steering pump replacement?

Also I need to know the best (least expensive) place to buy one.

Ok, and one more question, how do I tell if I have active suspension?

thanks,

It is extremely rare to ever replace a PS pump, very hard to damage. That said, the odds are good that a junkyard pump will be functional.

All active suspension Q45 have a "Q45a" on the rear.

Newbies are encouraged to read the previous 10,000 posts and of course the factory service manual and owners manual a few dozen times cover to cover. Where everything you need to understand is explained in minute detail.

ok thanks for the info, it's a Q45 so it does not have the active susp.

The pump is not damaged, its very noisy.

The power stering fluid res. is on the drivers side, small canister, stick made in cap, I found that and the fluid level is good.

but the pump is noisy, and my only conclusion is that I need to replace.

would you agree?

Are you sure its the pump and not the tensioner? Those tend to fail at about 80K tp 100 K mi. Loosen the belt and turn the tension pully -- if its rough its gone. Cheap part and easy to replace.

you can even replace the bearings... recent thread about idler/tensioner bearings that can be replaced at NAPA... I think they'll even press them in for you!

Yeah, do some reading and get the FSM and TSB before diagnosing big ticket items. Best for you.

Odds are rare for the pumps to go bad, BUT with my outstanding luck mine went bad. I tracked one down on ebay for $30. Only problem was it was off a wrecked Q and the pulley was crooked. Did a pulley swap and good as new. LMK if you need any more help, not sure if this thread is active.

Well I have replaced all 3 belts and idler pulleys / tensioners

glad I did it, definitely needed replacement, however I still have power steering noise and its definitely coming from the pump.

no leaks, just noisy

where can I find a how-to on replacement , already checked Q45.org, and searched archives.

also best place to buy new, or should I try to find a good used

thanks

If this was a Lexus I would buy new and get a spare [they get noisy in alarming numbers] but Q wrecks have a 99% chance of being fine for 300,000 miles assuming one replaces/flushes the ATF at decent intervals.
