Power Steering Problems

I found this thread in a search zerothread/246191

Is there a good way to tell whether the problem is my power steering pump or this u-joint assembly that is mentioned in the thread that i linked above?

The last thing I want to do is replace the ps pump and then still not have power steering most of the time.

jackup the front of the car and with the car off but the column unlocked turn from lock to lock, if you get resistance it's either a bad u-joint or a bad rack, if you get no resistance then your problem could still be the pump or the rack, if you get resistande, disconnnect the column from the racka nd move the u-joint ir every direction and see if you find resistance, if you find resistance, you need a new u-jint, if you get no resistance in the joint thaen the rack is the problem
