Okay so i have this 91 q that has a P/S problem when you turn it the pump seem like it goes in and out and growls. it had a leaking high pressure hose bought a new one solved the leak and still acted up so i replaced the Pump and bled it still acts up so i was wondering if this was a problem in the rack or if maybe the speed sensor for the pump is bad? almost out of ideas to fix it

though of taking tie-rods off wheels and turn the wheel and see if the rack is sticking i don't know how to test the sensor or if there's other components i should look at? any ideas will help at this point. thanks

Sounds like a bad variable-assist solenoid valve. It varies the volume of fluid allowed in to the rack, so at freeway speeds the steering feels tighter because assist is reduced. When at low speed or parking it opens to allow full fluid flow for full assist.

It is located on the rack next to where the steering lines attach. You could try to apply 12V directly to it and see if you hear it working. Otherwise you'd need a pressure gauge hooked in between the solenoid and rack (impossible.)

If you do indeed hear/feel it click, try it several times repeatedly, as your failure sounds intermittent.

Looks like dealer-only. $465 + shipping. :ohno: Maybe try your local junkyard/Pull-a-Part? Or ask the guys on here if anyone has a spare...
