ok i was autocrossing today and i noticed while i was in a turn my power steering seemed to not work halfway thru the turn, then return to normal. it has plenty of fluid and the belt looks fine. does this mean my rack is giving out?? my power steering hose does leak, maybe about a drop a day but doesnt seem to be a problem. basically it seems not to want to work if its under strain. any ideas??

My vote would go to a worn rack. It would be about time for such a thing knowing the workout your car gets...

I had a hose leaking and a few times I had the same thing happen. I think I was getting air into the system sometimes. I ended making a 90 deg turn and the bolt hold the the pressure side on came loose. I had power steering fluid all over the place. After I snugged it down I didn't have any problems til a few months later, my power steering pump went out.

mine does the same thing(not work too well) if i try to turn the wheel to quickly sometimes. or if i'm drifting it doesn't let the steering wheel spin freely when the car is in transition. i'm guessing its just time for a new rack. any suggestions? hey 574-240sx, u were probably leakin more than u thought thats probably why ur pump went.

I checked the level every week. Level was fine. I'm pretty sure it was the stress of drifting and AutoX that killed it and 190K of driving.

sounds like you guys pumps are going out / you are boiling the ps fluid. this started happening to me when i started drifting on bigger tires on the front, got a z32 ps cooler off ebay, plumbed it up, works perfect.

+1 on the write up...

also if u are not sure what the problems is .. i would start by changing the ps pump bc it is cheap and easy to change...if if wasnt the ps pump, it would be easy to sell ..then go from there ...the good thing about the power steering is there are not a lot than really can go wrong and there are not many parts that make up the system

Meh, everyone wants a write up. Sometimes common sense goes a long way.

i figure u could route one of the lines to go to your transmission cooler (aftermarket rad) the one i bought had a single model radiator for both manual and autos so it has the transmission cooler.
