I went under the Pathy today to adjust the serpentine belt, and removed the "skid plate" to find a clump of grease on the underside of it. Looking up, I see this nice little scene (center, 2/3rds the way up in the first pic). Looks like the transfer gear. How difficult would this be to fix or replace? I've yet to have to do steering work on a vehicle, but I'm willing to try if it's within the capabilities of a home mechanic.

Yummy, grease! I'm afraid I don't have much advice other than to see ST-15 of the FSM for an exploded parts view and hopefully some useful removal and installation steps.

That looks pretty straightforward; having everything pre-marked for alignment should make it an easy job. I'll have to take another look underneath tonight and see how tight it is down there. I just had a quick look, it might be tough to reach up to the steering column's upper joint.

I'm surprised how lightly everything is torqued... 22 ft-lbs for these bolts? Wow.
