The other day i heard a grinding noise when i was turning my steering wheel. So i put some power steering fluid in the reservoir and it was better. well ive been refilling it for a while and i didnt drive it for a day and there was a huge puddle so i figured id start workin on it :) How would i fix this problem? Should I do it myself or bring it to a mechanic? Thanks

You might also want to check and see if it is leaking from the boot area. if it's leaking out of where the boot is on the rack then you need a new rack cause your seal has broken. it needs to be rebuild or replaced if that happeneds. if that's the problem change it asap and make sure you don't drive without any fluide cause you could break the PS pump too.

I looked and the leak is parallel to the front left wheel. Right where the reservoir is. so i dont think its the problem mentioned above

Yeah don't buy that power steering leak fix stuff...just look inside the engine bay and have one of your friends turn the wheel while the car is on...my leak was the hose connecting to the ps pump.

i just replaced mine too. i dont think its the rack because i was just doing lots of work down there and didnt notice anything. i know the pump ran low for a while and when i refilled it, the sound was horrible. that and it had 190k+miles so i know it wasnt doing to well. i think my high pressure line is leaking because it looks wet. dont know if its supposed to , but it does.

wow, thats not as much as i thought they would be. i'll keep an eye on it. like i said, it looks like the hose was wet, or had been soaked. dont think its supposed to look like that, but i guess thats how some of the fluid leaked.

yeah, thats the highpressurse hose. there are two going to the pump, a return and that one. i think thats the one most people see leaking. maybe we can get nissan to do some kinda recall.

the best way to find a leak, be it power steering, oil or watever, get your car steam cleaned, in the engine bay, and underneith, then drive for a little while, then get the car back up, and look around, this isnt as easy as it sounds, but i used to work at a shop with steam rack, and lifts, so it was easy, but its do able with a hose and alota degreaser, and better so you dont blindly replace parts that look to be leaking when its only wet because of the fluid splashing around when ur goin down the freeway.

^ thats a good point. i know for a fact my front main seal is leaking and when the pulley is spinning it throws oil all over the place. i've learned whats good and whats not good by cleaning stuff off and seeing where it comes back from. i think you can also use that thing at the car wash, but im not sure how well it works.

Hello,

How difficult is it to replace the power steering hose? I bought a generic one and will be replacing it today. Is there a procedure somewhere that I can reference. I have a service manual but it does not provide a lot of detail in this area.

Thanks for any help.

Don't our cars use ATF for power steering? I remember reading it somewhere. I use it and it works.
