I lowered my car 2 weeks ago and when I turn the key to ON there is a loud hum for about 3 seconds then stops. I thought it was something to do with ABS since it is not hooked up anymore in the front, but today when I started my car my wheel was turning hard and humming just like when my rack and pinion was leaking. So I checked my fluid an it was low. I filled the fluid and the humming when I turn the key to ON got quieter and the wheel turned smoothly .

My question is what is the humming noise coming from when I turn my key to ON?

Does the humming sound like a buzzing noise? Like a relay buzzing noise?

I would guess you have air in the power steering system to say the least.

Its more of a humming. I don't see how anything I did would affect the powersteering though.

Can you trace where it coming from? (Mechanics stethoscope)

Usually, the humming comes from the power steering pump not having enough fluid to push. Makes sense, as your fluid level was low. I would first try to find where you are losing power steering fluid.

The only place I can see fluid is where the steering knuckle mates with the rack and pinion, I will have to take a closer look to see where the fluid is coming from or if it is just lubricant. The thing thats getting me is that it just happened out of the blue. It feels exactly like when my rack and pinion was leaking and that ended up costing me about a grand.

How much did you lower it? On the G50, 2 inches will put the tie rods at a mechanically disadvantageous angle.

No front ABS is not a good thing at all. Yikes! :picard:

I lowered it about 4-5 inches. My tie rod ends have spacers that angle the tie rod back down although they are still angled upwards.

And I couldn't find any ABS s14 spindles but I will swap for some ABS ones if the chance presents itself.

How did you lower by 4". I lowered 2" and I have to be really careful, you must be 3" off the ground. I think they are right, this sounds like a power steering issue. So the question is how did you get 4" lower? Cut springs, airbags, etc?

It's intermittent. Today was a colder morning and it turned hard and jerky but after the first turn it drives and turns fine.

Are the rack boots torn?

Where did you get the rack from and does it have a warranty?

Have a dealer check the pressure in the steering system. I say dealer because I don't know too many with the correct tool.
