What I have done so far:

Modified Hicas power steering pump

Took off backside connector, and removed iinterior shims (which fall right out pretty much, once you open it):

1) Where is the best place to bolt the reservoir in at?

Is the bigger connector the one that is supposed to be connected with the PS pump (the hose that needs to step up to a larger ID)?

2) I know this is very ghetto, but is it an accurate representation of the PS system?

3) Any idea what these are used for?

4) I understand that bracket goes between the block and the ac, does the pully need to be there for installation of power steering only?

So far the only parts that I know I am missing is a bolt to finish the de hicas modification and a hose from the reservoir to the pump, and the belt which according to a thread is:"Belts (PS, AC, alt) Gates K050370 Alt. K040345 PS & AC "or I could just order this: http://www.store.yahoo.com/pha....html

Last time I was in autozone they were no help, but I am going to try again to find that hose that steps down...any hints?

Anything I'm missing?

1. mounted on the drivers shock tower2. yeah that's fairly accurate3. the black bracket holds the AIV for the SR on the drivers side of the head. the second one looks really familiar but forget where exactly, you don't need them. I think it was for the heater hoses but I can't really seem to remember.4. No you don't need the pully for the PS install. that tensioner is for the AC belt

Are you using the KA reservoir or the SR? I used my non-hicas KA one and connected it to my Hicas SR pump. You have to go from a 1/2" to a 3/4" hose on the line from the reservoir to the pump.

when you mount the PS pump resevoir, take into account that you might have to do some drilling if you started with an '89 or a '90 chassis. If you own a '91 and up, game on.

My 1990 had the holes for a 1991+ ps resevoir. Nissan put a lot of excess holes in the car for this sort of stuff.

I appreciate the input.

Should I have any concerns or take any precautions with trying to startup a PS pump that hasn't been connected in 6 months? All I am planning on doing is filling the reservoir and turning it on.

bleed by filling the reservoir with atf and turning left to right, left to right and keep doing it till the bubbles are gone.

Thank you for the help! The install went really well, everything works and it feels so great to have power steering.

Now for the only problem. The high pressure line where it connects to the pump is leaking, and I couldn't figure out a solution for it tonight. I put a washer on each side of the connector and tightened it down what seemed fairly tight.

I am using the usdm connector with the jdm pump and a jdm bolt (the one with the holes in it). I have the jdm connector but I am 99% sure there is no way to uncrimp it and reconnect it to the hose, these things are hardcore. These are the large metal connectors that end in a ring and are crimped onto some very thick rubber hose.

How did you guys connect the high pressure line? Just use the stock 240sx line that was in the car previously and that worked out fine?

I will post pictures tomorrow.

btw, for the low pressure hose I used about 4 inches of a half inch DIA hose and pushed that onto the reservoir return. Then I took a length of 3/4" DIA hose and went from the PS pump return to the small section of 1/2" DIA hose. The 3/4" hose can be coerced over the smaller hose and then properly crimped down at the reservoir. No need to find a hose that has two different sized ends.

Anyone have any tips for the high pressure connection to the PS pump?

The high pressure line takes a lot of pressure, as much as 1300 psi. So you might want to double check and make sure there is no dirt between the washers and the bolt. You can use the JDM or USDM bolt, they are the same part. You have to torque the bolt to about 50 ft lbs.

Try to make sure its not leaking from somewhere else like the hose that comes from the resevoir.

Its def leaking at the high pressure connection. Once I turn the steering wheel a few times and build up good pressure, it actually squirts out of that connection.

I guess my first step will be to clean up the area around the washers, and torque it down again.

You should be able to get new crush washers at the dealer for a few $.

i was wondering if you had any more pics of you the modified hicas pump? because i have to do the same thing to my pump and i want to have something to compare it to. also did your pump work fine after you modified it?

and for those parts you wanted to know about somebody already answered that the black bracket is for the aiv well the other one is for the back of your sr for the heater hoses. you won't be needing that because it sends your heater hoses the wrong way so just throw it in the trash.

I filled my resivoir with atf to the right level and when I cranked the engine the fluid was squirting out of the pump. Does anybody have any ideas what this could be caused by? Do the KA and SR power steering pumps interchange? I believe mine is leaking, I put stop leak in it and did not work. Where is the best place to pick up a pump for a redtop? Thanks!!

Sorry, I didn't take any other pictures. The pump was working great for the short time I had the car on (Had to turn it off after a few minutes because of my leak which I still haven't got around to fixing...did my clutch line instead).

If you have questions, feel free to PM me, the modification is very straightforward though. Finding the correct sized bolt to act as a plug was the hardest part (wish I had recorded the thread and dia, maybe I can find it still).

New washers on the lines connecting to the pump fixed all of my leaks.

The pump went bad though, don't have any idea what caused it, but it was always loud.

I got the hicas pump, but I'm missing one pressure line located on the left side which goes to pump... now.. my problem is that I don't know which lines are for.. does anyone have pictures for it or anyone can tell me how to install it? I tried to find it, but no luck, and it's gonna cost $300 to get mechanic shop to do it....><
