I have a 1986 Z31 and i finally got it back up and running, but it's leaking power steering fluid all over my feet while I'm driving. After about 20 minutes of driving it will start smoking(badly) to the point where I can't see and have to get out of the car. I can't find where the leak is coming from just the area i think it is. Could use some one who knows the system better thanks.

Sounds like you may have a pinion shaft seal leaking on your steering gear.

It's not power steering fluid if it's coming down inside your firewall. First and foremost the power steering on Z cars use Dexron type ATF, power steering fluid is too thin and will make a small leak worse in a hurry. The only way the power steering could get fluid inside the car is if the steering shaft boot were completely gone and you have a leak shooting at just the right angle to get inside. the far more likely scenario is that you are leaking brake fluid, The master sits above your feet and if the seals on the master and booster are gone you can get fluid coming through the firewall. I've seen this happen. and if you are loosing brake fluid you wanna get that fixed ASAP!

if its an automatic couldn't it be trans fluid from the speedo cable? i could be entirely wrong but i thought Ive heard of a scenario where the speed sensor can leak sending fluid up the cable.

Turns out my power steering pump was just going out. But my heater core is leaking that's what was causing the smoking

Power steering pump is nowhere near the steering column. So I guess the fluid on the inside was simply coolant?
