My steering has been tight for awhile, so I bought some Lucas Power Steering Fluid and filled it up to the top of the filter. I drove around a bit, noticing my steering is much more loose. I parked, turned the car off and popped the hood and noticed that my power steering fluid was overflowing and bubbling out of the cap.

Sorry if the answer is obvious, but I don't know why this is happening. It didn't seem like I put too much in.

Q45Tech is against Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak, Because it can expand the rack seals then the seals will crumple because of the age.

You can flush the power steering and rest easy knowing that you have got almost all the crap out of it or 99.99999% of it.

1. Take it to a shop that does this.

2. leave the shop happy (Hopefully).

Or you can drain and refill it a couple of times which is cheaper and pretty easy to do. What you need is a pump from Walmart for $7, Then some dexron 3 transmission fluid.

1. Make sure the car is off

2. Drain the fluid and get as much out as you can.

3. Refill to the specified level on the dip stick.

4. Drive for 20 min then repeat.

Was the resivoir low?

Are the rack dust boots torn?

Why not just disconnect low pressure return line to resivour and add a 5 foot section of vinyl tubing to it temporarily and aim into a bucket- have friend start car and exercise steering wheel back and forth while you feed the resivour with a few quarts of fresh ATF....simple, cheap as can be, and gets every drop of the old crap out of the system.

The problem is is with the Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak I'm using? Now there's something I didn't expect. Since my power steering had a problem with leaking, I was told to specifically use that brand since it's cheaper than getting it the power steering repaired.

if I use another brand, won't I have to worry about the leaking again? Although letting it leak and refilling it every so often will probably still be cheaper than a repair. The Lucas brand doesn't seem to be leaking at all.. but this whole bubbling out of the cap does seems a bit more concerning.

How bad is the leak and where is it coming from?

My guess is its from a low pressure line, You can order it from on of our sponsors in the Advertisers forum, Cheaper to fix it than to throw low quality "Fix it in a bottle" treatment.

Trust me I had the same problem with my 1991 Q45, I went to Autozone and bot the same treatment you did and it NOTHING at all trust me, I was going to fix the line a day after I had my car accicent and lost the car.

To be honest, I'm actually not sure. I inherited the car from my father who tol me it used to leak. I took his word for it.

If it's a problem with a low pressure line, I'm assuming I just need to replace a tube/pipe that feeds the power steering fluid to the rest of my car. is there a specific name for that part?

If he said it used to leak why would you buy those additives?

I would have waited to see if it did indeed leak or not.

But here is how to see where its leaking from:
