Anybody ever had any whirring noise coming from their power steering? My steering seems to be fine but there's a new noise when turning under load.

I posted in the technical forum as well but thought I'd canvas this group as well.

thx, cmk

Doesn't sound good. You need to check steering oil level ASAP. If oil is low, it makes a noise and can hurt PS pump. Should be okay though since it just started. If oil is low, add some and you have to check for any leak.

yeah... ^^ I was going to say the same thing... If your power steering fluid level is low that could contribute to the pump not functioning as well... making noises, etc...

Thanks, I just checked and it is a little low. I haven't seen a leak however but I'll be on the lookout. Some paper towels on the garage floor tonight should do the trick. So far I've been lucky, she doesn't leak any fluids.

Good. Okay, do this. Add PS fluid to full and turn your wheel all the way to the right or left and stay like that a couple of sec. It's not a good idea to do that, but you can check your high pressure hose that way. Mine leaked only when I do that and I found a crack on HP hose.

Another one. PS pump has 2 main pieces bolted together with 3 or 4 bolts. Check the spot between those 2 pieces. I also had a leak there and tightening the bolts fixed it.

Great advice, thanks. Topping off the fluid did the trick and all has returned to normal. Now to see why it got low in the first place...
