The power door locks on my '94 convertible having taken to locking themselves unpredictably, whether I'm in the car, out of the car, driving down the road - there just doesn't seem to be any pattern to when or why they do it. I'm concerned about getting locked out of the car if I happen to forget and leave the keys inside sometime.

There is an aftermarket alarm and remote entry system on the car, but I'm not using or carrying the key fobs for that system. I never lock the car, anyway, because I know it will cost way more to replace a slashed top than to replace anything I might leave inside the car, so I thought maybe I could just remove a fuse to solve the problem for the time being. I'm not finding a fuse for the locks and my research here says the locks are "vacuum assisted". Is there a simple way to solve this issue? (basic, layman's terminology & preferably pictures, please, because I'm pretty new to being my own mechanic)

The root of your problem is that aftermarket alarm system. Many shops will half-a** an install job and it will cause a lot of issues down the road. I'd start with taking that out completely. It might even solve your problem.

The shop probably did a crap job splicing wires for the aftermarket unit. Find where they installed the unit and trace the wires to where they splice in. I bet there's a wire touching ground somewhere. The door lock timer is under the passenger kick panel. When I installed my Viper keyless entry unit, I had to make splices in that area for my keyless unit to communicate with the factory timer.

Well, I originally looked into having the alarm system removed since I'll likely never use it, but the local shop wants almost as much to remove it as the previous owner spent to install it.

Looking for wiring problems myself, I don't see anything unusual under the passenger side dash, but there is some wiring on the driver's side, just above the fuse panel. When I bumped/fiddled with it, a red light came on, and shortly thereafter the door locks triggered, so I'm guessing that's where the aux wiring is and that random vibrations of the car are causing a short from time to time. Will have to get in there with a flashlight and find the culprit so I can tape or disconnect it and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks for your advice.
