I'm not sure if this should be in the tech area, if not, my bad... but i wanted to paint my brake calipers, and i've been hearing a lot about powder coating. Is there a home kit, or does it have to be done professionally? If there is a home kit, can anyone give any suggestions? Is it like primering and painting, or is it different? Thanks,Adrian

p.s. sorry again if this is in the wrong place.

powder coating is exactly like it sounds, you spray a powder on the part to coat it, and then bake it in an oven for a while. you can do it at home but it requires a special sprayer and it'll make your oven stink forever so it's probably better to have it done.

you can just use high temp paint but it won't look as good for as long.

i think autozone also has a kit that uses some special enamal or something. just look around, you can probably find it.

I was in the market for powdercoating my 300zx brakes, but i ultimately decided against it because of projected cost and inability to find a shop that would do it for an individual.

The engine /caliper paints they sell at Autozone are pretty good. They have a ceramic material in the paint that supposedly protects it from heat. The result was pretty good (not powdercoat quality) but it dries quickly and is very glossy.

there is a company in NJ that does it for the individual, trgcoating.com - however, they charge up the *** (around 200 or so for a set).

In any case, if you have aluminum calipers, you may want to reconsider powder coating. There are theories that suggest aluminum structure will break down and weaken the structure (to what degree I don't know) during the baking process of the powercoating - some have done it and say it's fine, but something you should be away of.

Powdercoating is usually done professionally because of the cost of the equipment involved.

i powdercoat stuff at work. youll probably want to just paint your stuff to save the time of trying to find a place and the outcome really wont be too different than just painting them yourself. it will be better to powdercoat, but i dont think worth the extra time.
