While rotating my sons tires yesterday, I noticed a bulge in the sidewall of the pass. front tire. Also, the rim was just slightly bent at the same point.JR tells me that he does remember hitting a pothole down the road. I know that pothole and it was big!!! We replaced it (two) with a couple of Yoko Avid TRZ's that my local Lake Norman Nissan had in stock. They gave me a very good deal.

Anyway, has anybody ever gotten any money out of a City for damage due to pot holes???? If so, how did you go about it???

Teeheehee....I was thinking the same thing. I love that commercial.

No, SVT.....never had any luck doing that. Once we were driving through Arkansas and they had just taken the top layer of pavement off and little pieces of pavement were everywhere and we had about 20 pecks in our windshield. Tried to file for a new windshield but never got anywhere.

I started the process of trying to get money from the town once when I hit a pothole in the rain and trashed two brand new tires (which happened to be AVID TRZ's, actually). Unfortunately, I never followed through.

I was driving home with my wife from a charity function on a rainy Friday night. I was in the right lane of a two lane road. I didn't see the pothole until I hit it. It was a new pothole that caught me completely off guard. It appeared to be a rectangular hole cut in the pavement. The very next day an orange construction barrel was placed next the pothole and an orange traffic cone was placed inside the hole.

The tires didn't rupture, but had significant sidewall damage. When I brought my car in for service and a tire rotation a week or so later I was told that the tires should be replaced due to the sidewall damage and potential for a highway blowout.

I made a few calls to the town hall and found the person that I needed to talk to. He indicated that I need to write a letter explaining what happened and where and that I needed confirmation from the garage that the tires needed to be replaced. He said that the town investigates whether or not any road construction projects were active in that area (because the hole was rectangular and possibly man made). If any projects were active, the town would make the construction company pay for the tires. Otherwise, the town would review my case. The town sets aside money annually to pay for pothole damage.

You need to try calling the local town hall (where the pothole resides) and determining the process for filing a claim. Get a note from the garage that sidewall damage was noticed on the tires, likely from a pothole. Then make sure you follow-through!

EDIT: Pictures of the tires and the pothole will help your case.

Wayne, have contacted the city. They have a form to fill out.

This was here in Hooterville. THey had 'fixed' the hole a few weeks ago. My son was coming home from work in the rain and the hole had re-appeared.He didn't see it. It has since been patched for the second time.

Potholes are the reason we should check our tires frequently. There are lots and lots of potholes in Northern VA. My neighbor had bent his wheel and had a big nipple ( ) on the sidewall of his tire that grew bigger over time. I told him to get it replaced or he would suffer a blowout. He didnt listen. It blew. Spare was flat since he never inflated his tires. Which reminds me, when you check your tire pressure, remember the spare!

Sounds like they will have to honor your claim since it was a known problem spot. Good luck!

A friend at work ended up blowing 2 tries and trashing both rims (after market) going over a pot hole a couple of years ago. He was able to prove that it was a known problem and that indeed that hole did the damage and they paid for 2 new tires and rims for his truck. This is in Canada though, not sure of the whole process in the U.S.A.

Years back I drove into a section of road that had all the pavement removed for 20 feet. The drop in and lip on the way out blew all 4 tires and bent all 4 aftermarket rims on my riced out RX7. The construction crew forgot to put up signs warning of the road conditions. They were still there and saw the whole thing happen. It was around a corner on a 45mph road and they were done for the day and had just sent the flaggers home.

I fought the town for 18 months and got nada... They said the low profile tires, aftermarket rims, and dropped suspension were to blame for my car not being able to handle "reasonable road conditions".

Good luck trying to squeeze a dime out of your town.

Rich hope you'll get your $ back. I hate seeing crap like that. If that was the other way around they would charge you arm and leg.
