Have the opportunity to purchase a '92 Q45 with 115K miles. Very nice cosmetically. Carfax checks out OK.

At this mileage, what should I be looking at when evaluating this car, i.e, what components will probably need replacing, aside from oil/transmission fluid changes, brakes, etc???

Any additional information is appreciated.

Welcome to the Board.

Please read by a G50 Q45 in the Infiniti Articles section.

The first thing to do is to get the dealer performed service history, some of which may be archived becasue of the age of the car. If only one local dealer has serviced it, it is time to do some social engineering with a service writer there.

The first question one asks on a 1990-1993 Q45 is "Have the chain guides been replaced?"

After reviewing the dealer and other supplied service records, inspect the fluids and the oil galleys.

Then drive it. If you still want it, then get a senior Infiniti tech to inspect it.

It's all in the post.

I bought my 92 with over 200k on it! Chain guides! 92 had plastic and if yours haven't been changed to metal then don't buy that car. That said plan on spending another $5000 over the next 2 years.

You will be hooked and soon you'll have changed your TCU, ECU, Springs(strictly mods for perfomance and look) then the Fuel pump, under plenum hoses, Knock sensors, o2 sensors, fuel injectors, transmission, transmission mount, installation of external transmission cooler, replacing cracked cooling fan, belts, resealing valve covers, wiring harness, new Tokico Blue shocks with rubber booties, upper control arms, tension rod bushings, sway bars, sunroof swith, climate control display, new wheels, big brake upgrade, adding subframe spacers, new leather seats, drive shaft, steering rack, and you'll love the doors locking on you.

Other than that it's all cake!

Welcome to NICO... and I was just pouring it on. The above stuff is just what I've done to mine(I even left out much!) because I love the car and tend to go a little over board.

You will love the car and this is the place to get whatever you need to know about the Q and our sponsors give great discounts to NICO members! Again, Welcome aboard and find out why the Q is the best.

From zero to 100k the 90-93Q were pretty economical to maintain and repair thanks to 60k and 70k warranty. Just tires, brakes , alignments and fluid changes, spark plugs, belts, misc.......30k, 60k, 90k servicesFrom 100k to 200k the cost double to triple since wear and tear have accumulated.

I always point out that depending on the luck of the draw and how much was replaced/maintained by previous owners you can spend from 13 to 20 cents per mile [since Zero miles] to correct and maintain.

As good as somethings were designed and built, many things were unique and a few were taken used in other model of Nissan.

Parts are more expensive than domestics and have few substitutes.Technical expertise is rare amd hard to find in many States, even dealers have lost the edge because empolyees with experience go on to other locations.

The question you have to ask yourself is this pretty 120k 92 Q something you like well enough to keep for 5 years and are willing to spend $15,000 on plus purchase price and annual tag and insurance........$3,000 per year for maintenance and repairs.

We are jaded since we see dozens per year for sale because the owner learns the car needs serious expenditures to get back to good operating condition...........many times the list of need repairs/maintenance makes the car a NEGATIVE $5,000 or MORE VALUE.

I keep looking at a pristine 92 that needs $4,700 at my discounts and assuming $40/hour labor. I offered $1500 and the owner wants $2,000 down from $3500.

Hard to sell a car with a transmission malfunction light always on.

I have owned a 90 Q for 16 years and have spent around $40,000+ in {M&R} for 305,000 miles. I have been lucky in that the total cash for THREE transmissions [including $1000 for an extended warranty didn't exceed $2,400 less than a third - the retail $9,000.

Same with AC work and misc lots of spare parts from junkyards and purposely bought blown Q.

If you like speed, luxury, and owning a cool car, the initial $2K and the next $5K you spend on the car will be a great time.

ALWAYS ask here first, someone has already done it, and might have some free parts to help you out along the way.

We are a little biased about the Q, but once you take a 2,600 mile trip in one, you will understand (some may not take as long to fall in love than others).

It's as much fun as owning a muscle car, at least it is to me.

Oh, yeah!, Welcome to NICO!
