I am looking at a 2002 Q45 and I was wondering if there were any major performance mods for the Q. The reason I ask is that I am looking at a G35 too and those are muuuuuch quicker. I have heard rumors that the Q can be a monster with the right mods....just looking for input.

thanks,

I also read about Robert's switchable ECU. Does that think still exist? Does it work on the 2002 Q?

Robert's ECU is for 90-95 Qs.

For your 2002, make sure you get the software flashed to the latest, to improve throttle response.

Keep reading. There is a factory upadate, but these are incorporated into the 2003 and later along with a lower 3.13 final drive.

For real serious modifications, check out Impul.

Welcome and keep reading.

Get an extended warranty for the powertrain. There's examples on this forum of unusually early engine failures. Powertrain warranties are long and cheap.

If you want input from a recent 02 Q buyer, I'll tell you this;

The diff. between a Q & a G are night and day. The 02 Q is the supreme cruiser. Check out my picks. Mine is a frickin limmo.

As far as quickness and the G being "Muuuch faster" than the Q? Yeah I don't know about that! Maybe the 1st 50-100 yards, but I doubt it. I could eat G's for lunch and have. I just choose not to.

Modifications? WHY?

Modifications are for these other guys with Q's from the 90's. They're breaking down due to time, so these guys are modifying them while they're in there doing all the fixing. You won't or shouldn't have any problems with an 02 for a while. So modifying at this stage simply doesn't make sense, IMO.

Let the car do what the Nissan Gods intended it to do for a few years and modify later. Make sure that throttle ECM service deal has been done and you're good to go.

Now what I will say is definitely get the extended warranty with the purchase. I made the mistake of thinking I could just get one on my own later after the purchase and then found out in CA extended bumper to bumper warranties can only be purchased through dealers. So now I'm flying by the seat of my pants, naked with no warranty.

But I only have 40K miles on my car and make pretty good $$$, so I'm not too worried about it. I am still in search of a warranty though. I heard Mercury sells one here in CA.

I think your purchase decision also should consider your space requirements. How big are you? I was initially in the market for an M45. Love that car! Then I drove one and found out that the width in the knee / leg area was a little cramped. I'm 6'2" and like to be comfy. I test drove a Q and never looked back.

I could go on and on. The 02 Q is IMO the supreme Q of them all. By 02 they worked through many of the issues of the earlier Q's from the 90's and really got it down with this model.

Go drive one, you'll love it!

BTW, I paid $19K with 33K miles on it.

Good luck.

I didn't mod mine because it broke down. I did it to make it faster!

$19K with 33K? Wow. Nice.

Alright, alright!

But seriously, look at your under the hood pics.I'd say you're pushing the whole "Enthusiasts" thing way beyond the norm, eh?

You got all that under the hood.I got kids.

1 keeps me from having the other.

I just meant when it comes to many of the 90's Q's, many of the mech. parts are starting to reach there limits and will have to be replaced. That is the prime opportunity to do the cool modifications.

A car like mine is still within warranty limits and still a pup. To me, it's almost like why take out perfectly great working, well engineered, arguably already high performane parts to put in aftermarket mod parts.

Kinda that whole "Why fix it, if it ain't broke" kinda thing?Dig?

I do like them pic's o yours though!

As for size I run about 6 foot 4 and 290. I fit in the G and it would be a bit cramped with my wife and 2 kids in car seats. However I doubt I could get the Q to slide sideways around a corner burning the tires in 1st. That said I do a fair piece of driving from Dallas to Houston and I know that the Q is the cruiser. I owned a 2000 Q45T and it was as close to a Maybach as I will ever get.

Also please not the G is quicker....but the Q is FASTER. The Q is one of the fastest cars I have ever owned. It is happiest running from 40-140.

I am looking at a white on tan 02 with 80k miles and i am trying to drive it out for $17.

No need to doubt, people do it all the time. Search the Nico forums for a few who have.

I got kids too........and a wife that would kill me if she knew just how much is in the Q. It's the "other woman"

BTW, I do like your 2002 Q.That would be my next pick.

Hello,Brian is absolutely right about checking the records and warranty. There are truly no cost effective mods for the VK45 engine. Jet chips offers an ECU flash, but, the opinion on it is pretty low. The difference in interior quality between the G and Q is absurd. Different leagues. I could have purchased a brand new 06 G36 or my 04 M (M's and Q's were kissing cousins back then) for the same price out the door. The interior of the first gen. G just does not seem luxurious to me. Every time I get into a loaner car I am glad I did what I did. Does the G corner better? Oh hell yeah. For me, I had to be honest about my driving conditions (mostly city/highway not many trips to the mountains or anywhere without congestion). If I lived in the Ozarks or any other ninja driving destination, the G would be hard to say no to. In god's waiting room(Sarasota, Fl) luxury prevailed.Cheers and good luck,Mark
