Hey guys I picked up this 04 G35 sedan a few months ago. It had a vibration/sound at 40mph that I wasn't 100% sure about but I did notice that the car had 2 different front tires and a matching set of rear tires. I replaced all 4 and got the car aligned as the left front was toed out but now the vibration/sound has moved to 80mph. It seemed to get louder if I swerved to the left and got quiet if I swerved to the right. Does this sound like a wheel bearing failure?

Thanks,
Donald

P.S. The car has 103k on the clock if that matters.

That's what it sounds like to me. If the bearings had failed, you wouldn't be able to turn any more, except that you'd be able to pivot in circles around the one seized wheel. Sounds like you have a few that are on their way out, but aren't yet into dangerous territory.

I've had to replace two wheel bearings on my Altima. Does the noise sound reminiscent of a baseball card stuck in the spokes of a bicycle wheel? If it's starting at about 40mph, then you're likely okay for a little bit. I'd start getting nervous when the noise kicks in at about 25 or 30 mph. Take it in when you can, and be prepared for a hit between $300 and $400, depending on the labor used.

I'd describe it more as a "whomp whomp whomp whomp" sound almost as if I had a tire going down but I'm paranoid about flats so I check pressures once or twice a week so I know its not that. I'm assuming these cars have press-in bearings?

I imagine your car's is the same as mine. It's a sealed unit. You don't replace the bearings, you replace the wheel hub assembly. It's a $125 part, I think. Maybe more for the spiffy "Infiniti" one.

yeah 143 + shipping from infinitiparts.com...but it is the entire hub which shouldn't be out of the question to do a driveway replacement.

As long as you have the right tools. Aside from wheel chocks, stands and a jack, you'll need a wheel puller.

check your inner control arm bushings and compression rod bushings

cheapest place I've seen for the wheel bearings is www.rockauto.com - was at least $50 cheaper than other places carrying the same wheel bearing

I'm bringing this back from the dead for an update. Went ahead and bought the wheel bearing from rockauto.com which I will most definitely order from again. 123 shipped to my work. Installed this last Sunday and sound is gone and the old bearing had a spot in it that you could feel when you turned it with your hand. Thanks for the help guys!
