I gave a 1998 Maxima GXE Automatic with 69K miles on it. Every time I hit the gas at cruising speed the trans. clunks and jolts. Then when I let off the gas, it does the same thing ang you can feel a shimmy. It has been doing it for a while but is getting annoying. The trans. fluid looks okay for not being flushed in 2 years, and smells okay. Could it possibly be a torque converter problem?

check the mounts, have some one rev the car while you look and listen and don't go too close something might come shooting.

I doubt its the mounts, otherwise it would be doing it all the time. I think this is a fairly common problem on the Maximas... you might want to ask this in the Maxima section of NICO, or call your dealership and ask if there is a technical service bulletin out for this problem.

There is no bulletin I am aware of pertaining to this sort of incident.

There are two common causes of this type of complaint typically.

1-Any of the four motor mounts may be failing. The ones are the left and right side are standard rubber insulators. The front and rear mounts are electronically controlled and since they have moving parts are more prone to failure. With the parking brake on and the hood open put the car in gear and with your foot on the brake slowly hit the gas in Drive and watch for the motor to shift, do the same in Reverse and compare the results. Having someone else either look or do this, look at the mounts for signs of excess movement, (typically anything <3/8").

2-The lower radiator core support can deteriorate over time and expose to salt and cause the lower engine cradle to actually shift one accel or decel conditions.

for whatever reason I thought that it was doing this during shifts, and sustaining the "judder" after a shift... guess I just read too fast, either that or I was flashing back to my transmission problems in my maxima
