I have two problems but I will separate them into two posts... ko here is the rundown on my transmission situation. I have never driven another 240 besides my own so I have no idea what is normal and not but I have driven newer cars.... When I shift it just feels that the gears are loose or something. Don't know how to describe it so I will just leave that comment on the side....

Sometimes I can't shift back into first. Like I will be at a stoplight, try to move out of neutral and get into first (or from reverse into first) and when I move it into position, it won't go in. It's like something is blocking it. The first time this happen I was scared I wouldn't be able to drive it. Then I just kept shifting into the other gears and moving them around a bit, then eventually I can get back into first.

The same thing happens in reverse. Sometimes when I start the car and want to back out of my driveway, sometimes it wont shift into reverse. So I move the shifter around, rev the engine a lil bit (have no idea if that helps or not) and eventually I can shift into reverse.

What is the deal? Car is 1993 240SX with about 80k miles. I bought it at 75k miles. It has new transmission fluid and diffy fluid. And I am not very tech savvy yet... so please don't ask me to like "pull off your transmission and check this and that" because I won't be able to do that. But if you guys can let me know if it is normal, or fi something is dying, I can buy whatever it is and have a mechanic replace it.. or if this is something that can only be diagnosed by a mechanic. or whatever. Thanks.

ok first start by pulling the trans out.......j/p It is not abnormal for a trans not to engauge into first or reverse without haveing to put it in another higher gear to stop the trans from spinning. so it may be what your experiancing is perfectly normal.

Well that is a little comforting... in the S13 tech section, someone suggested that they had the exact same problems in another car of theirs and that in their case it was worn syncro's. I myself think that they may be getting worn out due to a "loose" kind of feeling in the gears but let's hope you are right and that its normal. I may just take it to a mechanic or something and have them drive it around and maybe they can "feel" it out to see whats going on.

they do have a problem with the bushing on the bottom of the shift lever coming apart giving you a sloppy shifter(excessive side to side movement in gear). also rev does not have a syncro.

My 89 does the exact same thing, I wouldn't worry about it.

first and reverse have this "problem" on all 240sx's. They both dont have sincros like 2-5 so many times when your at a dead stop the two gears in the transmission are lined up wrong.

example - when the gear works:

_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_

_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_

And when it doesnt:

_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_

|¯|_|¯|_|¯|_|¯|

see on the bottom example if you tried to push the bottom two peices together they wont match? If you think of it this way then the answer is simple. Next time the gear wont go in leave it in neutral and pump the clutch once or twice to get the gear spun (lets say the top one) to a different orientation and it should go in :)

this should happen infrequently in first, but happens a lot in reverse.

if there is an incline you can also release the brake briefly to let the car roll, which will spin the other gear and will achieve the same end :) (by other gear i mean the bottom one in the example)

BTW that lose feeling is actually because you can feel even the slightest slop in the transmission because the shifter is so direct. You can actually feel the gears ingaging. If you take off the shifter boot you will see a giant weight as part of the shifter, as well as noticing the shift knob is very heavy when you take it off. this is all to help dampen the roughness of the shifter, but in the end this is better because you can "feel" what the car is doing.

i also added alittle something in. The more you know about whats going on behind the scenes the better you can use, diagnose, and fix the car :D
