Well, my sohc KA had timing chain rattle, so I took it apart and replaced the guids and chain, put it all back together and now it won't start. I think I might have got it off a tooth when i put it back together. If it is a tooth off would the car not start? Just curious if that could be my problem before I tear it down again. I should have checked it before I put the timing cover on, but it's a little late for that.

It is possible , you can test that theroy by adjusting your distributor around a bit. If you can get it to start with the distributor fully one way or the other your off a tooth and need to go back in and reset it. When you installed the chain you should have been lining up the colored marks on the chain with the dots on the gears. If this is the case just hope your not so far off you tagged a valve when cranking it.

Does anyone know how many links from silver link to silver link? All I replaced were my guides and the chain doesn't have any distinguishing marks on it. It was about 2-4 teeth off, could that have caused damage?

yes its possible it hit a valve. If the chain doesnt have distinguishing marks what are the silver links your reffering to.

Yes, I'm working on an 89 SOHC. I'm refering to the silver links that you line up with the dots on the cam gear and the crank.

youve got it, as long as those to links match the dots on the gears you are right on.

My chain doesn't have the Silver links on it(it's the old chain I just replaced the guides), so I was wondering how many links from silver chain to silver chain?

No, sorry I don't think I was completely clear. I only have one chain and it's the old one, I put new guides in the engine and used the old chain. The chain does not have the marks on it. I was just wondering if anyone knew how many links were from silver link to silver link.

Ok if your chain has different color/distinctive links. Those links likly go on your timing marks on the cam and crank gears.

Ok, I set the timing on the engine according to the picture above, so it should be top dead center with the notches in the crank and the cam gear at 12 oclock, right? I reassembled the engine and put the crank pully on and the timing mark on it shows about 10 degrees BTDC. Did I do something wrong???

Did you turn the engine a bot during assembly or are your marks on the gears still right on? If they are does it appear the pullet spun on the rubber between the belt part of the pulley and the inner part of the pulley.

Thinking back on it, when I put the bolt in the crank I had the car in fifth gear. When I tightnd it it turnd the crank a bit but the cam didn't spin, just kind of to the slack out of the chain. Should I be fine?

I thinks so. You may have moved the cam a little bit as it turns a half the speed of the crank so the crank will move twice the distance the cam will if moved.

I was passing threw when I just had to comment

There are no marks on the chain because it doesn’t matter where the chain sits, the engine has one crank and one cam, so it doesn’t matter how you position the chain, or am I just loosing it?

your losing it. there is marks to set the appropriate amount of teeth from one gear to the next. This isnt true for all car lines though or aftermarket chains.
