Hey everyone,

I've found a '91 Q locally that doesn't run listed for $2k obo. It doesn't say WHY it doesn't run, but it looks straight otherwise. I was thinking of picking this up and getting it on the road again. My guess is that the guides went and the engine is wrecked. I suppose it's possible that the fuel pump or something went out, but it's probably the guides. I have yet to contact the seller, but it's an idea.

What do you guys think? I was going to offer them a grand and see if they bit. It's in a very affluent area, so my guess is that they would like to get rid of it quickly and get a little spending money out of it. I think that would be quite a deal as long as a certain admin still has his engine available...:help

Better yet, have a "maintenance nightmare" list handy and ask them when was the last time each thing was done... Offer $500 and tell 'em you're gonna have to drop $3-5K JUST to make it safe and functional (partially true).

No way is it worth more than a grand.

Good call. I will search for maintenance issues and make a list. What do you think of the idea?

Hitman's on it. $2k for a non-running Q is just too much. I know of one Q with failed guides that was actually repaired (as opposed to swapped engine). Cost about $2400 to fix at an independent if I recall right. I don't know the conditions during which the engine failed, but I was surprised that only 4 valves had to be replaced.

We now only pay $600------$1200 [if pristine body and interior with lots of new parts]. Even a 96Q with a bad motor is only worth $2,000.[hard and expensive to find a take out motor] whereas the 94-95 might be worth $2500 due to easier motor availibility.

I wouldn't diagnose, pull the head, change 4 valves and reassemble for $2400 because if the valves were bad so probably were the rod, piston, and rod and crank bearings on that cylinder.

It might run but for how long, then you get an angry customer, unless you offered no warranty and had them sign a document that they fully understood and agreed.....but then again sometimes you are lucky.
