Just went and looked at a 91 tt today. It had 144k on the body, and supposedly 55k on the motor. The body needed a paint job very badly and very minimal body work(front left fender needed to be pulled a little).Well any hoot, time comes to start up the engine, the owner tells me that this car has a Jim Wolf ECU, Centerforce Clutch, Catback exhaust, and i saw a pop charger on it also.he starts the car with a jumper box since it was sitting all winter long, i do believe it cause the car seemed to be in a lifeless state.Starts up great, engine sounds good, though when i went towards the rear of the car i kinda heard this popping noise coming from the exhaust, It wasn't that noticeable but yet i could tell that there was something going on here. I asked him about the problem and he told me that it needs new plugs which he is going to do for me. Is this sounds a symptom of DETONATION? what can u do to fix this problem, and if heard is it a bad sign of things to come with the car?He was also going to include a set of 18 ADR's wrapped in brand new Dunlop ZR tires, not sure what specific tires. But they were staggered with 235 in the front and 265's in the rear.

Along with the other questions that i have asked for before, how much do you think this car is worth? I kinda have an idea of how much i would offer him but i would then again like another persons input on this matter.Note: It needs a new paint job and minimal body work.this sat. im going to take a test drive in it, he said he is also going to put some race gas in it to clean it out? is that bull****, cause doesn't racegas decrease the chance of detonation?I'll make i check it out on the road w/ out the race gas.

INPUT NEEDED VERY IMPORTANT...

he's also including another set of DropZone coilover, which in my opinion are pretty generic. and he said the car also has a lightened flywheel.

Ill give u a head start

hmmm. If he hasnt been driving it for a while u can bet its because the car has a problem and he didnt wanna make it worse by driving it. So he is selling it on u.

If I were you i would have it checked out by a mechanic. Its only gonna cost u $200 bucks at the most but will save u from buying a load of ****. You will most likely be able to knock down the price even more with any problems that are found.

I personally would not buy it without taking it to a mechanic.

If it checks out by the mechanic then I would pay between $6,000 to $6,500

Ur estimate on the price is only 1000 off of what he was asking. he said 7500 to be exact.

But then again, what are the symptoms for detonation, and how can it be stopped and fixed? Is detonation going to be a permanent problem with the car?it did kinda sound like there were beans popping in the exhaust.

The turbo's would muffle out most of the sound of detonation. if its consistant like pokapokapokapoka about as fast as you can say it at idle, then its normal, my car does it as well as my friend's -- both with catbacks.

Detonation is a pinging noise and usually you'll only hear it under boost, not at idle.

tell him to wait up on the race gas, if he's that fixated on cleaning it up for you, tell him he can put in all he wants after you take it for a spin. Race gas in a tank that has been sitting for several months can loosen up chunks in the fuel system and plug the fuel filter, ethanol also.

SO, take it for a test drive without the race gas, have it inspected and be ready to put some cash into it (leave yourself an allowance of about 2000$ for unforseen issues).
