My 96 240, with about 94,000 miles on it has just started having a problem. I have the manual transmission. When I'm in gear already...and I press the pedal, rather than transfering all the power to the drive train, the engine revs as though it were not in gear, then slows down as the car begins to accelerate.

It's behaving almost like an automatic. I'm certain its in gear. I thought the clutch was slipping but it does it the worst in 5th gear. At highway speeds (80+), when I'm in 5th gear, I can redline the engine simply by pressing the gas to the floor...and eventually the revs will drop and the car will speed up. I know the problem isn't the tach because I can hear and feel the engine rev.

Can anyone help me with this? Could the transmission be going? Clutch? Is it safe to drive in this condition?

It JUST recently started doing this. I don't know if its the colder air (temp is usually 80 or higher now its around 50) or if someone sabatoged it when I went to have the oil changed.

I have had this problem with my 240 before. I think you will be changing your clutch soon. so pretty much, rpms rise speed stays the same or increases a little. You might need to adjust the clutch petal but I'd say you clutch is toast. Nick

This happens even when I'm cruising in 5th gear. And you think its the clutch? It feels like something is slipping, but I didn't think it would happen in 5th gear. I'm glad it might be the clutch and not the transmission.

clutch for sure. possibly a weak pressure plate too. either way its time for a clutch kit.

Thanks so much guys. How much time do I have before I need to replace this? Will it do more damage if I procrastinate? Rather than replace this clutch...I'd rather do an engine swap! :D Either that or build up the engine and do a turbo, but I'll probably do the swap.

you shouldnt let it go to long if its doing it now cause you could tear up your flywheel.
