So my cousin just called me up and told me that he's thinking about selling his Garrett GT35 70 compressor/62 turbine journal bearing center section snail for $500. What's the boost threshold for that turbocharger on the KA24DE?

If I were to get this GT35, would the stock DE's internals be able to handle 8-10psi of boost? I'm on a tight budget and cannot afford forged internals right now.

Of the following parts, which upgrade combination would work best with an Apex SAFC and a GT35 with stock DE internals: 550cc, 740cc; Z32 MAF (3"), Q45 MAF (3.5"); blow-through, pull-through?

Lastly, which affordable manifold would be best besides a cast-iron log?

My current setup is in the link in the signature and it hasn't given me any problems at all, in case it helps with answering any questions. My budget would be about $1200, including the $500 for the turbo.

Oh and by the way, what the hell does FTW mean?!

FTW = for the winFTMFW = for the mother fukin win

SAFC cant handle injectors bigger than 550cc (twice as big as stock).

Besides cast log manifolds, all thats left are tubular steel manis that cost about twice as much.

If youre sticking with the SAFC, I'd go with a Z32 MAF.

I dont know much about the GT35...

GT35 = 4000-4200rpm full boost. GAY for making the 270whp you're gonna make at such low boost. I'd say go for a smaller turbo.

I thought that 550s was the most an SAFC could handle with the stock MAF. Wouldn't the size difference of a Z32 MAF make up for part of the injector size difference, enabling me to run bigger injectors than 550cc? Is this right?

Also, please keep in mind that this is a step-by-step process, with a ~18psi, built bottom end, and 375+ HP goal by the end of the project. I would not spend $1200 and change my whole current setup to get 270HP as a final result.

Thanks for your help and please keep posting!

It's still not a very appropriate turbo for a 375whp goal. You're talkin' about a turbo that's capable of over 500whp.

There are other turbochargers for about the same money, or slightly more, but new, that are easily capable of 375whp without waiting for boost to come in sometime tomorrow.

GT30GT32T3/T04ET3/T04B

Those are the first that come to mind, initially.

The SAFC does the MAF and injector conversions for you, so the ECU doesn't know that it's running a larger MAF and injectors.

SAFC = whatever MAF you want to run, 550cc injector max.

Besides, anything over about 250-260whp, and you'll definitely need some timing control of some sort, whether it's a tuned ECU or BTM.

People have controlled larger injectors than 555cc..... I had 555cc and had no problems whatsoever. And still had room to modify. I read a couple places where 740cc was used. All a matter of adjusting things and what your set-up is. Depending on cams pistons ignition system etc.For your goals get SAFC, z32 MAFS, 555cc injectors,In relaity I say you fork over the $500 right now to get your ecu tuned by enthalpy. So when you turn up the boost to 18psi or whatever it may be good or might need a little modification. But in case of a boost spike while at 8psi your timing is covered and you won't pop your engine. I spiked to 20lbs the other night.... when I was running 12psi..... But end goal for my setup is 17ish and I had it at 17 the night before. Faulty MBC. Wait the extra 2 or so weeks to get things installed the 1st time. Less headache.

For the time being, I'm going to start looking for the Z32 MAF. I can use it with my current setup and whichever one I end up with in the future.

If I go with a T3 I'll also get some 555cc injectors and a Tial wastegate. The manifold choice will have to depend on how the budget goes with the other stuff. Now I have to do some research on what T3 has the best threshold/top-end balance on a KA24DE with stock internals.

Boost threshold varies with how much boost you plan to run as well. For any given turbo, if you change the wastegate's setting to a higher boost level, it will take longer to reach the threshold. Depending on the turbo the difference in RPM or time may be longer between each pound of boost. Even within the same turbo as efficiency is not linear at all boost levels.

I think Ivan made 350whp at 10psi on a gt35. you WILL need timing control, you will most likely need something better than an safc(just get an enthalpy or jwt tune).

you WILL need more money than $1200. Don't get a q45 maf... it's junk. It may be big, but it only supports as much as the ka maf. get a z32 maf.

Was the GT35 @ 10 psi (350HP) on stock internals? It would take some serious fuel and spark management to handle all those horses without a built bottom end...

New turbo: >$500New manifold: ~$250New dump: ~$100New injectors: ~$350New wastegate: ~$150Z32 MAF: ~$150

Total: ~$1500 (+ECU tune: ~$500)= ~$2000

This might have to wait until the summer, I just spent $480 today on my 4Runner AND I bought a $500 engagement ring 2 weeks ago. There goes half of my project budget, daggamitt!!!

Might have to stick with the current GT28R setup for a while...

Stick with current set-up until your able to get everything done right(and quality) and have extra $$$ in case you want to add a supporting mod.
