Hi all,

So someone near me is selling an 2003 G35 sedan for $1000 with 244k on the clock. Yeah I know, sounds like alot of miles. It's so cheap because it "needs head gaskets and has a substantial oil leak".

If I were to buy this car, would I be better off (in terms of expense/reliability) buying a used lower mileage engine, or rebuilding the current one (assuming it isn't destroyed like a cracked head/block). I would be doing all of the labor either way, this is far from my first engine rebuild. I haven't worked on a VQ35 before, but I've rebuilt several VG30DE's and VQ30DE's. I'm guessing at such high miles I would need to have it bored out at the very least.

Any thoughts?

If you can do the work, then it may be worth it...but it could be more trouble than it's worth. We have a few good techs on the site for help.

If you rebuild the existing and use high quality parts you will have a motor you can count on. if you buy a lower-mile used motor you can't be sure of anything other than it will probably be cheaper initially.

Thanks for the replies guys. At the moment I doubt I'll end up getting it because the idiot selling it won't respond. Why would you say "email me if interested" and not reply?

Might be a sign that it's not for you and to move on :)

Exactly what I was thinking. It was probably beat to death with that many miles on it in just 10 years.

Yeah. You already know you need a motor and at that mileage you are looking at replacing most components to ensure you don't get into a revolving cycle of repair. Brakes, lines, fluids, shocks, etc.
