Hey you guys!

When disassembling my engine recently to change the head gasket, one of my buddies took out the camshaft brackets WITHOUT taking a picture or making a drawing of where their position was.

How deep in trouble am I really? Do any of you guys have a picture of your engine during an overhaul, that could upload it here? This can possibly help me position my brackets, but I have seen that there are differences even on european SR20DET's regarding the marks on the brackets, so I'm not expecting it to be that easy.

Thankful for answers,

Vegard

If you read any of the myriad of how to's, you'd know that the tops of each cap is marked with a number for order and an I or E for which side it goes on.

And there is a directional arrow on them too. FWIW, my exhaust brackets don't have the E on them or numbers. Baggies + Sharpie = Win.

Yeah, see thats the point..

My brackets have different numbers compared to some other SR20's I have looked at, so it's clear to me that it's different on some engines, or someone is not using original camshaft brackets.

Of course I would have put them in order on my workbench if only I had done this, but it wasn't me so take your time to read please.

Seems strange that Nissan didn't make the brackets with the same numbering on all SR20's, which of course would have made this problem piece of cake to fix.

Does anybody have a picture of their engine during overhauling? Im looking for brackets that are marked "1-1, 1-4, 1-6, 1-8" and so on. The brackets that are just marked with small "dots" won't help me.

Thnx guys,

Vegard

Bump

Could this be the correct positioning of the brackets?

Back of the engine

1-5 TB ------ 1-5 TB1-6 thin ------ 1-8 thin1-5 thin ------ 1-5 thin1-1 thin ------ 1-4 thin1-1 TB ------ 1-2 thin

Front of the engine

TB = thick bracket, and there are three of these. 7 of the thin brackets.

Any thoughts people?

At the front of the motor, you shoudl swap the thin and thick brackets. The standard cams use a thick front cap, but as for VVT, I don't know if it uses a thin bracket or the usual thick bracket.

To be honest, I would consider having a shop take a look at it. You have to consider having the caps being in round when the whole thing is installed. If it's out of round, it'll damage the cam and the journals in the head. If you have a good inside micrometer, you can download a service manual and run the numbers yourself to be certain you have good caps that are in the correct positions.
