anyone ever do any porting or port matching with an electric hand dremel? is it possible? ive read some web pages on how to do it using a hand dremel but i want to hear from someone with personal experiance with it.

I wouldnt try it w/o an AFM (air flow meter) but if you must go a little at a time and step your way to a fine grit paper roll...make sure it's smooth...and mark w/ a marker about how much bigger you want it, no more than a couple cm's.too much is very bad and you'll need a new head. I'd leave it to the pro's unless you got a spare lying around.

I've done it, just duct taped a gasket to the intake mani and went to work...I wouldn't ordinarily have done it but the person before me tried and REALLY screwed it up so I had to at least fix their mistakes.

YOUR SUPPOSED TO USE SPECIAL STONES SO YOU DON'T WEAKEN THE METAL.

yeah special... I watched them do it on HPTV the other day they just used the regular diamond grey bits and a paper roll to get it real smooth...as to what he said, if your taking metal off it's gonna get weaker, obviously. Its a thick piece of metal I don't think it'll hurt it any to shave away a cm or twoI dont think it makes a difference what stones you use, just take it easy and get it smooth, no scores

so how long do you think it would take to do one side of the head? im not sure what to expect, whether its going to really take it off easily or a lot of time to get it done.

take as much time as you need...play with the dremel on a seperate piece of metal if you have one lying around to see how much/little you can take off at a time, It will take off whatever depending on the amount of pressure you apply to it. So just take it lightly...and dont rush anything, you should'nt be there all night or anything, but you should spend at least an hour or more on it. just take a little off and then visually inspect and feel it for grooves and the like. sounds like youre pretty insistant on trying this out...did you just get a new dremel and want to play with it? hahaha I know the feeling I cant stop welding things since my dad got a MIG I went through a spool already welding just about anything together I could find.let us know how it turns out!

I think they have porting kits at Jeg's and Summit Racing w/ all the stones and stuff.

Yes, buy a porting kit. The ones I can think of are from Cornwell (tool company), Snap-On (tool company), I'm pretty sure Jegs and Summit both have them. You'll spend around $40 on it, but it comes with everything and you can do more than just one head with everything there. I got mine from Cornwell.

The little pen attachment for a dremel is awesome for doing it as well, much easier to do detail work. I went through a LOT of paper rolls to do an intake manifold, probably about 15.

since i have never taken the head of my KA what are some of the weak/rough spots i should first look for? it seems a few of you have done the intake manifold so i take it that the manifold needs a bit of porting work

To make a good port job worth wile you need to have the head "flow tested" to make sure all ports flow the same. If you want the best port job, have a head shop do it. Now cleaning up the ports or polishing them is a good idea to do with a dermal.

A good porting job on a KA head should take no less then 25 hours!
