porting and polishing???

I have heard of people porting and polishing, but what? is it the intake and exhuast manifolds.. what range of hp gains is to be expected from doing this...

Don't qoute me on trhis but from what I understand it's not done for hp gains, as it's done to increase flow. Someone will be by to correct me so look out for it.

but doesn't better flow = better engine efficency which = more hp.... I think....
