HEY GUYS IM NEW HERE BUT I GOT A FEW QUESTIONS FOR THE MAXIMA LOVERS-IM RUNNIN A 96 MAX WITH HOLLOW CAT, I.A.T CHIP, SHORT RAM WITH MODIFIED QUARTER PANEL DUCT, AND PLATINUM 2'S.I PORTED MY THROTTLE BODY AND INTAKE MANIFOLD YESTERDAY AND TOOK IT FOR A TEST RUN SOON AFTER. BECAUSE OF MY CHIP I HAVE TO RUN IT AS SOON AS I RECONNECT THE BATTERY SO THE ECU RELEARNS THE WAY I DRIVE. ANYWAYS... I TOOK ABOUT 3 MILLIMETERS OFF THE FRONT AND MAYBE TWO OFF THE BACK AND I/M WITH A DREMEL FLAP SANDER BIT(worked like a charm!) 240 GRIT BUFFING BIT AND FINISHED IT WITH 2000 GRIT SANDPAPER FOR THE POLISH. IT TOOK ME 6 AND A HALF HOURS (MAYBE 4-5 TOTAL WORK TIME). NOW IT MIGHT SOUND CRAZY BUT I SWEAR I COULD FEEL THE DIFFERENCE RIGHT AWAY AND THE AIR SUCTION SOUNDED A LITTLE DIFFERENT AS WELL. IS THERE A SIGNIFICANT HORSE POWER GAIN FROM PORT AND POLISH OR IS IT THE THROTTLE RESPONSE THAT IM FEELING? SOMEBODY GIVE ME SOME ANSWERS PLEASE~

You did the entire intake manifold too?

I've been wanting to clean mine out, maybe smoothing out the bumps wouldn't hurt either.

no not the intire manifold i didnt want to take it off cuz its a huge pain in the ***. but the opening is big enough where, with the right tools, you can get in there pretty far... id say up to 10 inches. the bumps is cuz the TB is casted so it wouldnt hurt to smooth it out. im telling you the flap sandpaper bit works so well. its 120 grit then you hit it with the 240 buffing and 1000 or 2000 auto paint sandpaper. the whole job cost me maybe 30 dollars including the 4 dollar gasket. good deal for the gains if you ask me...

BY THE WAY PEOPLE THE TOP 2 PICTURES ARE THE 'AFTER' PICS.... SMOOTH...

From what you have described, I estimate a hp gain of less than .5hp.

I'm not knocking the work that you have done, but if you want to increase air flow, then you need to read about the 2000 VI intake mod, or the MEVI intake mod. The short coming with the 4th gen intake is that it is designed for low end torque and power, whereas the above mentioned mods help the power on the high end.

could'nt you just put a pathfinder tb on your max and that will be the same as porting it

the US00VI is better than the MEVI. Dyno Graphs prove it.

Also... isnt the Pathfinder TB like... 90mm? where as the maximas TB is about 60mm?

Maximaman:

Did you get a new butterfly? I thought I saw a gap in your TB (just an observation

well that sucks i feel stupid. half of one horsepower? if i would have known i wouldnt have done it. ive been talking with other max owners and the guys that port and polish the same motor as mine claim between 3-5 hp gains dyno tested and thats more than one person.

and no the pathfinder wouldnt work for a few reasons other than the verticle placement and obscenely larger mouth. a stock max tb is like 58 mill... mine is 61. i could probably get another mm out of it but that would be pushing it.

cris93se i didnt get a new butterfly i only buffed out the build up. im no pro on engine modifying but i try. i'll look into the US00VI right now.

thanks for the input guys.

Don't be discouraged, what you did took time and effort; it just didn't have the desired outcome.

If you truly want the stock intake to flow better, you could try extrusion honing. But given the limitations of the 4th gen intake, I would suggest looking at the 00VI swap. You can find information on that in the FAQ Sticky at the top of the forum.

ah now i see. your talking about the whole intake manifold swap off a 2000 max. variable intake... am i right? can someone like me actually do this swap correctly? cuz this is my daily driver. my next two moves were aluminum underdrive and full headers with a port job as well. advice is taken into serious consideration and i really appreciate it

Hard to say. Have a read through the how-to and see if it looks doable for you.zerothread?id=121423

Y-pipe and headers would compliment the VI swap nicely.
