My plenum will be coming off soon and I was wondering if anyone couls shed some light on porting the intake runners, I did a search but could not come up with anything, If im not mistaken I remember Q45Tech has this mod done to his car as well as AAACOMP, I also think at one point Stillen said that the kit they sold added 10 HP, is this possible, and if so can I do this mod myself, im pretty decent with a dremmel :D

If you read the posts carefully, I think you'll find negligble gain for any smoothing or enalarging of the plenum intake bores because of how the intake system is tuned. Rather, you will probably hurt lower end performance.

10 HP is hardly noticeable.

Now, it someone discovers a process to Teflon coat the runners, I would be real interested.

Maybe you could try an Extrude/Hone treatment? Don't know if you are familiar with this technique, but it is done by forcing a muddy abrasive type material under pressure though any negative space you desire. The result is a really smooth finish. I would think this would help basic air flow, right? If I had the time and money I'd go a step further and also coat the intake/runners with some kind of heat sheilding to keep the intake as cool as possilbe. I'd also extrude/hone the exhaust manifolds as well as heat sheild/coat them to keep down under hood temps as well as aid exhaust scavenging. Swain Technology does all kinds of custom coatings including heat sheilding. You can even coat piston skirts & bearing surfaces for lower friction. Sport Compact Car (300ZX project car, Sept 1999, Feb 2001)did a REALLY comprehensive article on engine building where much of what I mentioned is discussed.

I know that a ridge is located at the end of each runner wich causes a slight size diff from the runner to the manifold wich causes a little reversion that aids in the production of tourquein the lower rpms, however if you open up the runners and do not touch the ridge I would think that the tourque charecteristics of the motor would not be changed, we will see what Tech says about this, Thanks

The opposite the step jumps in sizing and ridges are there to reduce reversion at low speeds!

Think about the fact that the intake valves [and exhaust valves] are open for 248 degrees yet a full intake/exhaust stroke top to bottom is only 180 degrees........what happens in the other 68 degrees plus the overlap is 8 or 28 deegrees.

It is a fine balance to be able to run 45-50 mph in 4th with AC on going up a slight hill in a 4300 pound car....changing anything will most likely get worse performance in the under 2500 rpm range.

The best I have ever heard of is a gain of less than 10 Hp at 6900 rpm.......nothing at 6,000 since that is the design point.

Having special exhaust cams [made for a few thousand] with 10-15 [even 20] more duration will create a lot more over 6,000 HP. More cam lift will require cutting deeper flys into pistions.....weaking them excessively.

If somebody had figured a way to get more it would still be around......just like the JWT ecu and JWT nitrous packages.

The gain vs cost just wasn't attractive.

The 90-93 with JWT ecu hits the 75 lb/ft per liter [337 total] wall so only above 6,000 rpm HP can be tilted up......just remember the new 2003Q engine still only creates 333 lb/ft about 1% LESS than the 90-93 can make with ecu mods.

Sure 340 HP sounds impressive but that is only 283 lb/ft at 6300 rpm.......the JWT ecu yields 307 HP at 6300 about 256 lb/ft...............15-27 more lb/ft for a second x 2 gears.......might be a 0.1 second difference.

So my next question would be do you still have this mod done to your car?

I have an extrudehone plenum and lower runners $1150 down the drain so to speak back in 1994...[but the heads were not touched].........as I said the peak HP went up minutely.........couldn't feel any difference.

So ... sounds like the thing to do is to run the thing 90-93 with the JWT ecu stuff and leave it at that? I also have a stillen airflow/intake gadget - which is a preferred "add on" - I suppose.

I found this thread searching for info on stuff to do to the heads in the context of P&P. CAMs too but seems to be little to be gained, at much expense.

We HPC coat a lot of the Mustang Intake assembly - for the poster who was looking for some type of "COATING" that helps with heat, discoloration, appearance too ...

Hot under hood air never is preferred!

If I was that poster asking about the coating the interior of hte plenum, it was for purposes of maintaining cleanliness and flow characteristics.

It's good to know a mew member is doing the research of the previous posts.

Fo Shizzle DAWG !!! :D LOL ....

Ive got a Lincoln Mark VIII upper and lower intake assembly Im packaging up for a shippoff to HPC in utah. I'll take some before and after PIC's, and perhaps you can make some comments or assumptions on application to Q45's.

If nothing else it sure looks nice :-) Jury is still out ....

as far as the new guy doing the search ... you guys are a typing live encyclopedia of Q45 wisdom!!! This place is Q45 tweeker NIRVANA!

Thanks guys .. and Q45tech - dude my cranium is ache-n' --- but uhhhh .... Thanks man!
