I recently purchased a complete KA24DE motor, transmission, ecu, and wiring harness out of a '92 nissan 240sx and I am going to rebuild it. Is it worth it to port and polish the head and if so how much of a difference will it make.

Thanks,Loren

well, Loren, I am planning on doing just the same. From what I have read, the DE head in stock form doesn't flow very well in the high RPMs. A ported and polished head will definitly help in the higher RPMs. A good set of valves that are undercut (background) will help alot as well :) I can't tell you exact gains, but, I'm sure someone on here has experienced this.

Thanks for the information. I have also heard a lot about changing out the cams for '91 cams. Is this a wise decision if I do that at the same time or is it really not worth it.

I think it's a wise decision. From what I have read on these forums, the '91 cams help quite a bit, especially in the higher RPMs. So, those cams teamed with a nicely ported head and good valves should give a very noticable horsepower gain. I have read that the '91 cams are worth 9HP at the rear wheels alone. You may want to consider the adjustable timing gears from JWT as slightly advancing the cams with a ported head will help you to retain low RPM power. Otherwise, the gains you see from these mods will probably be felt in the 5-7000 RPM range. It would be nice to be able to fine tune the cams to the power where you want it :)
