hey all, I've always loved the Porsche 944, not for it's extreme speed(though it is a pretty fast car) but because it has such great handling, and because it's a great looking car, my asst. soccer coach had one, and it was an awesome car, but he totaled it:( anyway, I was wondering if you had any idea about swapping out an RB25DET into that car? I've heard of the corvette LT-1 being put in there, anybody have any opinions? is it a bad idea to mix companys? because if it could be done, I think it could have alot of power, and since the 944 puts it's power to the rear wheels(that's the only reason I'm posting this) it might be do-able. Thanks for the input, just asking random questions that pop into my head, sry if I sound stupid. Later. ....AREM:firehead

the only way to know if its stupid is to ask, personally, i dont know much about porches, but im sure fitting the engine in there wouldnt be a problem, however keeping it cool might be (was the porsche still aircooled?), if its aircooled, and the rb25det was liquid cooled, that might bring about a proble,, and also the wiring, porsche has always doen their lil signurature things on cars, and im not sure if the 944 fits into that category, but if i were u id ask a mechanic near u, as im no professional, my guess is it can be done with $$$

with enough money, anything is possible. i've never heard of this swap before. it would be real sweet i think, but it might not be the easiest thing to do.

yah that porsche was watercooled 928 and 924 were the first water cooled mass produced porsches

shoudlnt be too hard of a swap , you will need to look at overall height of the rb engine comapred to the stock 924 engine , the engine in a 924 sits on a 15-30 deg angle to keep the hoodline low (i can make yet another slant6 chrysler mention here)

if your looking for a 924 with more oomph try to find a 944 or 968

The biggest problem is the location of the transmission. Its in the back, connected to the differential. It may even be a single unit, I don't remember.

Swapping the transmission would be astoundingly expensive. Any engine swap would have to stay within the limits of the stock transmission.

You're right, reggiegsd. The 924, 944, and 968 have a rear mounted transaxle (transmission and differential in one). They're pretty strong- strong enough to handle the torque from a stock LT1. They can be modified to handle much more. Some mid-engine custom cars use this transaxle with built LT1s, LS1s, and the Mustang's 4.6L V-8. I don't know if the 911 Turbo transaxle can be swapped in, but it definitely can handle more power. (Cars like the Ultima GTR and Mosler MT900 use the 911 turbo transmission.)

Good luck

sounds coolwill probably be a ***** to find an engine though, not exactly sure but i doubt there are many 944 engines around, i mean they aren't exactly falling from the sky

944 engines definately arent dropping from the sky..i was looking at getting one instead of the 240, cheaper car, low milage, but geez that's expensive to work on, i'd really like to see that swap done. fyi, if you're anywhere around arkansas i know of a low milage 85 944 pretty cheap :()ast

There was a turbo option available for the 944. If you want the power go that route. They were supposed to have pretty strong blocks, but any thing that has "Porsche" on it is going to triple in price. They were great cars and if I had the dough to get a turbo 944 and put some money into it, I'd would have bought that over the 240. But alass, no dough flow yo....

One of my friends has a complete 1988 944 and he is looking to sell it. it doesnt run the only problem is that the timing belt came off and it fried the head, but i am pretty sure that the block is good and the suspension is in perfect shape. I do agree that the 944 is a really good handling car, b/c when my friend had his running he let me drive it and it had to be the funnest car to drive that i have ever driven. He is selling the entire car the way that it is right now for 2,000. if you would like to find out more about the car just email me and i can have him give you the details
