I have a 3.5 and my car makes this noise too. I''ve only heard it twice so far, but the first time it was SO loud I thought mabe a rock hit me b/c I was on the freeway. I pulled over and there was nothing. The second time I was idle in my driveway....i'm gonna have my friend look at it since i'm getting stillen exhaust added to my car this weekend.

SOLUTION TO KNOCKING/POPPING SOUND! Ok so I've had my 2.5 S coupe for a about two weeks now. Started hearing the sound couple days after having my car took it back to the dealership. The sound that occurs randomly especially when on idle. Nissan said that it's a piston slap on the second piston which is what's causing the popping sound that everyone is complaining about. That being said and my coupe is still within factory warranty they are replacing my used engine for a brand new engine for free! Hopefully that's the real reason for the sound I'll find out in a week. I get a new engine though. yay. Hope that helps you guys.

i have that same problem with my 3.5 cvt. i will get that popping sound randomly. mostly when my car has just shut off. planning on taking it in during the week and seeing what theyll do. from what ive seen they probably wont fix it but if they replace something then whatever brand new part.

doesnt make sense that its a piston. the sound comes from under the car moreso than the front...

I agree. This noise usually happens shortly after the car is turned off. How can it be the pistons if the engine's not turning over?

I have had the same problem from after 2 weeks i bought the AC. U guys described it well. Its very annoying and embarrassing to have a new car make these loud noises. I have always guessed it was a heat shield that is mounted to the bottom side of the car heating up and flexing/popping.

Any updates on this issue? I cant think of any way to mod them and make the noise stop.

i was looking for this thread. i just started hearing a noise when im parked or idle too. its not as bad as some of you are describing (baseball hitting the car) but its still noticeable.

i first heard the noise when i was sitting in the car with the girlfriend. it sounded like something fell on top of my car...from a tree or something. i noticed it kept doing it whenever i park. it doesnt do it all the time..nor 3 times in a row. it does it maybe once or twice at most, right after i turn off the car. im gonna have to call nissan tomorrow while im still in warranty. just got the car in may and im already 1/3 through my warranty

Very glad I found this topic...I've been wondering what the hell that noise is for the last few weeks...it honestly scares the crap out of me and I really want to know if it's doing any kind of damage to my car or not...and from what I've read, the dealerships don't seem to be helping at all

After 6 times in for service (my poor, baby, brand new car...), I finally went to a different dealership, which I was referred to by a friend. Though it is almost 2 hours round trip for me to get there, it was WORTH it. Not only are they 1000 times more professional at this location, but they FIXED my problem! As soon as I described the noise and conditions under which it happens to the mechanic, he seemed confident that he knew what it was. I picked up my car on Wednesday and (knock on wood), haven't heard the noise even once since then. Considering I used to hear it every single time I would slow my car down, come to a stop, idle, or turn the car off...this is amazing to me.

All they did was tightened and secured the heat shield (which is what I told the guys to do originally, 2.5 months ago!). I suggest anyone who still has this problem go get their heat shields tightly secured as well. This is a known problem for our generation Altimas.

Good luck! I will post if anything changes with mine.

I hear everyone talking about their coupes, but I own an 09 2.5SL Sedan and im having the same problem, i think it started either shortly before or shortly after I had my wheels replaced in the leak recall, and it definitely sounds like a pop noise coming from underneath the car, and the tennis ball against the hood sound is a great description, just under the car as mentioned....

I have not taken it into the dealer, but has anyone recently (2010) heard anything about a fix for this problem? It only happens after I have been driving, and occurs when i am not moving (stop lights, stop signs) and have been sitting for more than 10-15 seconds. It also occurs when I turn the vehicle off and is also very embarrassing and disconcerting to passengers and myself....

I love this car otherwise, so what is Nissan going to do to remedy this?

Ok guys - listen up. I have had my car in the dealership at least 7 times for this problem. They replaced the front pipe twice. Still heard the noise. Each time I went there I told them I thought it was the heat shield. Now I'm just a girl and not a mechanic so they dismissed me. I finally had it after they told me it was a normal noise - we know its not. I went to a different Nissan dealership and guess what? It was the heatshield in the middle of the car that was heating up and popping and hitting the body of the car. They fixed it by putting washers behind the rivets so that the heat shield cannot hit the body of the car. I'm happy to say I haven't heard the noise in 3 days - woohoo!! They should have listened to me a year ago. Tell your mechanics this is the fix. If you need further details let me know. Good luck!!

hey SCANNON007, have you heard that sound since they fixed the heatshield ??????????
i thought that i was the only one that had this problem with the altima. i have a 2008 altima coupe, 2.5 S and ive had this exact same problem for over a year. i must have brought my car to the dealer near me over 5 times and they keep telling me that they either dont hear the sound or that they tightened the exhaust bracket.

Finally a thread i can relate to. Unfortunately for me, i was just ignoring it and thought it was a normal thing. I have 3.5SR manual, everytime i start my engine and leaves i hear a "clunk" sound underneath ma engine. The first time i heard it, i ignored it but as the day goes on and months pass by. Every single time i start and leave the same sound comes back. I hope thats what you guys are talking about, right?? So basically its the heatshield? not my intake heatshield right?? its a different heatshield??

That is the ABS self check that happens every time you start the car after it has sat for a period of time. All Altimas do that and it's mentioned in the owners manual. Once you cross (5 or 10mph) the ABS pulsates once to ensure it's working properly. It's totally normal.

The noise we're talking about is completely different and only happens after the engine is warm.

the knocking/popping sound in my 2008 coupe 2.5 is so bad and im getting nowhere with my dealership that i felt i had to call 1-800-nissan-1 yesterday....i told them the deal and they said theyre gonna look into it and get back to me....they should call today. everybody with this problem should call north american nissan, 1-800-nissan-1 and complain about the problem so we can finally get it fixed, hopefully...ill post on here what happens when i hear back

I got a hold of somebody from North American Nissan and they told me they would check into the knocking sound in my car. A few days later they called me back and told me to bring the car into my dealer, in New Jersey, and I did. They call me back and say that they didnt hear the sound yet again for the 6th time. As I am driving home from the dealer i hear the sound 5 times. Ive had it with Nissan. This is the last Nissan I will own after this experience. And if anybody lives in Northern New Jersey, stay away from Bergenfield Nissan. They are horrible.
