My `93 240 SX (auto transmission) makes a weird popping noise when going in reverse with the wheel turned to the right pretty much every time. It also did this noise tonight when I had to slam on the brakes.

A friend told me it might be something called a CV joint. How much would this be to fix, AND is it something I need to really worry about causing further damage?

Thanks in advance folks!

I believe the term CV joint is really only limited to FWD cars. They are on the end of the axles on the FWD cars and is what allows the front wheels to turn, whils still keeping the drive axle attached. Our cars do not have drive axles in the front. I assume that is where your noise is coming from? The front? if so, check your tension rod bushing and make sure the silicone fluid is not leaking. If it's not that, then a spring may not be seated correctly. Is your car lowered?

The 240 doesn't have CV joints, it has rear axle shafts. CV joints are typically only on FWD and 4WD cars with a transaxle (although in some rare cases they can found on RWD also). However, our cars don't have them. Just a good old pumpkin and an axle in the back.

That popping noise you are hearing could be the rear brake pads, especially since you noted hearing it while braking also. I had a similar sound on my 240 (manual) while going in reverse and turning the wheel. It was like a clattering rumble and I could feel it through the wheels. I changed the rear brake pads, no more rumble. Check your rear pads and see how worn they are. Handbrake also may need to be adjusted.

I've recently had new rear brake pads installed, so I doubt it's that.

Okay, then that's one thing to check off...

Where exactly is the popping noise coming from? Front, rear, driver's side, passenger side?

Could be a lot of things...strut mount, tension rod bushing, wonky ball joint...not to be vague here, but a lot of things can go "pop".

Sounds like it's coming from underneath to the rear/right side actually.

just to double check..yea, the rear drive axles of my 89 240sx have CV joints since they are multi'link suspension back there...

from advance auto parts:

A1 Cardone 606047 CV Half-Shaft Assembly: Reman.; Rear; Left Lifetime Limited Warranty Ships in 5 days $65.99 $60.00 core A1 Cardone 606059 CV Half-Shaft Assembly: Reman.; Rear; Right Lifetime Limited Warranty Ships in 5 days $65.99 $75.00 core

I knew that my friends' camaro/firebirds have solid rear drive shafts, while this 240 has to "flex" w/ the bumps... soo yea, check your CV boots back there if it's torn & the grease has leaked out...just like on FWD cars, if it's clicking, then that's the possible cause.

I'll be darned...I stand corrected.

I suppose I never thought of that as a CV joint in the traditional sense...I had always assumed they were used for FWD only, but it makes sense with multilink to have them in the back as well. Guess you learn something new every day.

It sure could have been...how long ago? I was there last month looking for butyl sealant (tail lamps leaking).

Be sure your wheels are torqued down. They will "pop" if they are not...

Every car guy should have a very good(aka expensive) torque wrench. I can't stress this enough. Loose wheels are more of a problem than most people realize. I see this firsthand at my shop, where do-it-yourselfers are having their cars brought in on a flatbed tow truck because they "didn't have a torque wrench" or "didn't know" or they "tightened it real good" and thought it'd be ok.
