There are no new cars with pop-up lights. If you know of any, you should post what they are, because I realized that I can't think of even one. Why is this? Were the pop-up headlights just a fad, or are there disadvantages to them (besides freezing up in the winter)?

motors burn out, plugs & boots can come loose more easily, they break the lines of the car when open. There are plenty of little reasons like that. As a matter of fact the main reason they get used at all if I recall is to get more headlight height from a low-trimmed vehicle.

I think the pop-ups just went out of style.... people seem to like stationary lights more now. There are wind/drag advantages to non popup lights....

im not sure but doesnt lambo or ferrari still have a car with pop ups?

i believe it was a fad. like in the 80s to early 90s it was box cars, then in the mid 90s it was bubble cars, 2000s were big bubble cars and present is like future cars with weird lines and really tall height.

every once in a while a maserati or ferrari comes out with one but because they aren't really done by model year its hard to say when the last one was.

'80s fad, 'vette tradition. there really is no advantage to pop-ups besides remembering that you have your lights off at night, and aesthetic reasons.

I will say that they are a pain in the *** if you want to flash your high beams. You have to plan it out ahead of time. They're the main reason I want a silvia-conversion.

make sure you get a pair, otherwise you can get a lazy eye effect, ESPECIALLY if you do or plan on doing sleepy eyes.

you seriously paid a few hundred just so you could flash your high beams? why not just get a set of driving lights on a switch

the ferrari F40 had extra pop-ups on top of its regular lighting.

i'm putting my turnsignals in my pop-ups, as they don't pop-down anymore, and ive never seen pop-ups with turnsignals in them, it just wouldnt make sense

I havent done it yet, and the point isn't the high beam thing so much, as I just really dont like flips that much. They were neat for the first couple weeks, but then they started to irritate me a little. The more I looked into the conversion the more I liked it tho (just personal preference, and that there aren't any near me maybe) so I'd probably go with it either way.

I remember seeing on some TV show once that pop ups started with the Ferrari Daytona. They actually did pop ups because plexiglass headlamp covers were banned in the US. However, a quick web search and the oldest Daytona I can find is a '68, and the Corvette started with flip ups in 1963. Maybe I am missing something with the Daytona.

Its anywhere from $700-$1500 depending on the condition, the type of headlights you get with it, and so on. Thats not including shipping or the cost of painting it.

I HATE the new-er futuristic looking cars. I never understood what the difference was until you just pointed it out. The high taillights with huge drooping rear bumper. The only car I like that look on is the g35. I dont like tall + bubble. I miss the box cars

But yeah, there arent many pop-up headlights anymore...even the new c6 corvette did away with the pop-ups.

Yep, but if you pay 15 you're getting ripped off. I priced myself around 800+paint.

And what if I dont want an SR? Ever think of that?

methinks the main reason for popups was to keep the lines of the car clean(er) despite the fact of having to run the sealed-beam headlights that were mandated in the US

its also for safety reasons. Think about running over someone. If the light(s) hit the body in the impact, it may cause more damage to the hit person than a car that doesnt have pop up headlights.

I heard it was now illegal is some European countries that disalowed pop-ups and that is why new cars dont have them. I especially heard that was the case with the new c-6. Remember, all the C-6 protos were pop-ups?

I have been looking into the SR lately (my KA is in pretty low shape right now). Try about $2600 from a reputable source for a redtop (phase2, HT). A blacktop is now $3000 or more.

Bahahahaha

No... no you couldnt... A couple of years ago yes, but if you think you can get an Essar that will actually run for 1.5k then you are sadly mistaken.

The is an advantage to popups in states where the cops issue lowering tickets. Most lowering tickets are designed so the officer/inspector must measure from the ground to the center of the headlight, and that figure had to be 21 inches (might have been 24, I can't remeber). If you have a fixed headlight, the center will be lower than with a popup. My car is physically lower than my friends Civic hatch, but the center of my light is higher when popped up so I can dodge tickets that he can't.

I solidly agree there. I might bite if I lived nearby and could personally get the motor fully inspected by a professional mechanic that I trust (objective opinion).
