I read the Spicer report some time ago. I have some reservations, because similar tests can show more dirt being tranferred through particular filters, but no one seems to know how much dirt is TOO much. You could say a K&N has 25 particles per million against a paper filter that has only 5. So you think, oh, it's 5 times worse! But maybe that amount of contaminants is not even critical until you get above 100 per million, or even 200. So 'scale' is everything. The downside of paper is it becomes restrictive from the first time you use it. Flow falls off much more dramatically, even if it does hold back more dirt.Of course the most conservative approach is any dirt is too much.
Both AEM and Amsoil offer cone and panel filters that use special fibers. These are long life or long time filters. No oil is used, no linen no foam. So the fear of having oil on the air sensor or dirt get past the very thin linen material is not a concern.I don't know how good these filters are, to be honest. But I am running an Amsoil one now. Part no for the panel filter is EAA74. Cost is actually a little less than K&N. AEM makes a cone that will fit the Stillen box (6" ID with 5" media cone). It is also a fiber filter, and uses a cleaner for any degreasing. Recommended service is like 25K for both I think. The Amsoil is supposed to be good for 100K or 4 years, the AEM a lifetime. The Amsoil can be vacuumed from the outside, or use low pressure shop air from the inside. Now you know all I do. Hope it helps or at least offers more options.I got inti this discussion long after I came up with my 'handle' by the way.
