Quick question.

Last night I rinsed, cleaned, and oiled my Jim Wolf Pop Charger for my 2004 G35. Afterwards, I went for a test drive expecting everything to be fine. As I accelerated onto the highway, the engine gave out at 2300 RPM. Forunately, it was downhill and I was able to make it safely to the next exit. Any time I revved up to 2300 RPM, the engine gave out, kinda like a rev limiter was kicking in. My first thought was that some oil or water got into the engine. But since it's so consistent at 2300 RPM (even just throttling in neutral), I'm thinking the engine is not getting enough air. Did I over oil it (I sprayed it twice, 20 minutes apart).

Thoughts?

I did make it home safely on backroads! :)

Sounds like over oiling and oil on MAF sensor.

The 1 time I've cleaned mine I sprayed twice, but left it sitting for a few hours before reinstalling, as well as using shop towel to soak any excess oil up.

Did you touch the throttle body? Never, ever...ever touch that thing. It doesn't take much to break it. Another thing to check is the MAF sensor. It may be covered in oil if you put it on too thick...

im due for a cleaning on my K&Ns... this makes me scared to re oil them... i might do minimum oil... or just let them stay dirty a little while longer til i upgrade my intake to a dry filter...

Update: I let it sit overnight, then I took the filter out, shook it out a bit more, and reinstalled. Took it on a quick (spirited) drive, got RPMs up to 6k-ish. Seems to be pulling just fine... So maybe it was an issue of letting it dry out more. As far as I know, I didn't touch the MAF. Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll take it on the highway tonight when there is less traffic out there! :)

I would say excessive oil got through onto the sensor. They also make a maf sensor cleaner.

After taking a tour of the R2C facility, I'm happy that I use their filters. If you saw the media comparison between theirs & K&N, your jaw would hit the ground. That and the fact NO oiling needed with R2C. We also spent some time on the dyno comparing their old plastic square tube design to the new aluminum round tube that will be nickel plated and the car picked up 8-10hp more than the old design, which was seen throughout the power band.
