Normal idle for our KA's is around 600 +/-. By surge do you mean it jumps up then falls back down to normal? Mine does that too, and I have heard other people talk about it so I think it's normal. Sometimes if mine sticks real high (around 1500) I will turn the AC on, then turn it off and the idle drops back down.

does it also act like at time it wants to stall out? then if maybe its the idle air control. I had a problem with that once.

Proper idle rpm ranges is 700+/-,1000+/- AC

I had that problem when I first got my 240. I cleaned my throttle body, adjusted the IAA valve, checked TPS, cleaned the AIV system, cleaned the MAFS, and replaced the fuel filter.Problem solved.

mine is an automatic so the car will literally start to buck as the idle slowly drops and then jumps between 400 and 600.

plugging the AICV did nothing to it, and if tried almost everything but swapping MAFS and cleaning the throttle body, but i think those are great places to start.

good post Nissan_240sx, largest wealth of information and you barely had to write anything, truely useful.
